Spartacus
Jun 23rd, 2006 at 10:25pm

I'm watching Spartacus on the history channel right now. In the battle scene where the slaves encounter the experienced roman army, Spartacus commands "slings and arrows"

A bunch of boys then use the underhand with just a couple wind ups. The romans go into 'tortoise' formation, and are then run down by the slaves calvalry.

Just thought I'd let you know. I was rather pleased with the depiction Smiley

that is good that there is a decent  portrayal of slingers in the movies (or at least one of them), helps the word get out and makes our job of unteaching the media's represetation of the sling so that we can reteach the sling the proper way alot easier.

The underhanded whip style like in the movie is typical of the sling casts done in that time. It was the universal method, mainly because it was effective and could be done with the slingers in formation.

I'm Smartacus, Sparty's brainy younger brother! I saw that movie on the History channel, too. For the most part, I was pretty impressed with it.

On a show about Pericles, they have the segment with the weapons expert who talked about the asiatic recurve bow.
I typed this as I heard it, and my fingers are slow sorry

Warning DECIPHER AT OWN RISK

Quote:
men armed with slingshots effectivly snipers of day slingshot cast in lead has weight earodynamically shaped bullet would kill *shows* this is copy says dexa meaning 'take that' millienium old soldiers wit... sling in basket and hurl it *demonstrates greek method*

EDIT: *more on post two of next page*

so they were talking about heracles being greek?  because that is his greek name.  hercules is the roman name.  that's interesting.  so they were talking about slingers as though they were sort of like the rag tag freelance hit men of the day.  that's very interesting

Sorry, I just made a huge mistake on that. I meant to say Pericles, as in, the greek politician who built the Parthenon, but they were mentioning herakles as I wrote the setup up.

It was actually portraying the slingers as a hugely powerful and proffesional force. The segment was about the forces which were used to defend the land's two, 8-mile long, 16 foot thick walls which protected their access to the sea. He talked about how no army would stand a chance because of the rain of arrows from the specially recruited archers. Then he quickly discussed how the slingers were used and were the ones who actually did the aiming - killing officers and such. It seemed to send the message "hugely important, respected, and deadly, but slings are just nowhere near as cool as Asiatic recurves, so I won't give them much time"
