hmmm... you could try using it without a pouch or a different kind of leather. Or, what I would to is make a smaller pouch. It isn't important to make the pouch deep at all, just to keep it on (in my experience).

One problem I had with a sling I made was that the pouch was made too deep, and it would rarely release the ammo. I had to use large ammunition to get it to release. Perhaps you may also be using ammo that's too small for the sling you made.

Tip 1: Practice
Tip 2: Practice
Tip 3: Practice
Tip 4: Aim at a large target that you're sure no one will care if you damage (such as a tree) and start with soft, yet heavy ammo (tennis balls are perfect).
Tip 5: Take a break and spend some time at this forum Tongue

Oh yeah, sorry, I nearly forgot. For accuracy, use a short sling. Longer slings sacrifice accuracy for power. Also try the Apache style ( http://www.slinging.org/22.html ). It's the least powerful, but the most accurate (in my experiece).

Certainly read through the Guides and Articles section if you haven't already ( http://www.slinging.org/articles.html ). My personal favourite style is tennis/figure-8 (it has a lot of names...). It looks practically impossible and takes forever to learn, but you just suddenly figure it out (usually). I'm fairly accurate with figure-8 and can get good distance with it. Definately try using tennis balls for ammo first if you can get your hands on some.

Whatever is far enough that you go "Shocked".

It really depends on the person. Someone here was suggesting dividing the distance you slung by the distance you could have thrown the object without the sling to give a more fair ratio of skill. For Apache style, I don't even think about distance. My Apache is about 15 yards (before hitting object). My figure-8 and underhand go about 80 yards (before landing on the ground). Of course that's with a regular tennis ball. With a golf ball I can easily do over 100 yards with figure-8.

(all distances are guesstimated)
