Spontaneous Knots
May 15th, 2006 at 5:28pm

OK, you are out slinging, and all of a sudden your sling feels wrong, one cord is too short ... you look at it and the release cord has tied a knot in itself.

Has this happened to you?  What is the most complicated knot you've seen form spontaneously?

I just read an article on knots in Wikipedia, and I learned that American Indians call the overhand knot, "the knot that ties itself."  I can truly attest to that!  But I have also seen a figure-8 knot in my release cord.  I have not seen anything more complicated, yet, but I wonder...

i have had a simple overhand knot towards the end of the release cord before, a few times if i remember correctly.   perhaps it has something to do with the way the cord whips around itself after certain style throws.  what style do you use?

I used to have that problem years ago with my personal rigs.  The most complicated knot I've seen to date involved a highly specialized sling, employing a much higher leverage ratio than normal, which ended up whipping itself into a Laguardian knot.  They ended up having to cut out air travel for quite some time.

Ewww, that was bad.....yet some how I can't delete it.

Go ahead Dale,  I deserve it.

Ow!  LaGuardia ... Gordian ... Ow!

TechStuf, the only consolation I have, when dealing with someone like you, is what my Punster friend said to me once ...

"You think you have it bad?  You only have to listen to the ones that make it out of my mouth; I have to listen to them ALL!"

"cut out air travel" -- and you say you didn't know about the Gordian knot?  Riight...

We are having a positively giardian outbreak of bad puns here.

No,  personally I quit writing backwards and looking into mirrors when I was 12.

haha, I write backwards fairly often. I'm left handed, it's just smoother for me. You don't need a mirror to read it either....

It sure can draw some strange looks though Roll Eyes

TechStuf,
If I remember,  Leonardo da Vinci was a southpaw, and all his journals were written right-to-left, so that I would have to hold his writings up to a mirror to read them.  Is that what your cryptic remark referred to?

Try writing backwards with your left hand, not your right (er ... you are a "northpaw," aren't you?).  I tried it, somehow my brain can translate the motions and backwards write can I.  Not very legibly, but it worked!

leonardo davinci is supposed to have written things backwards like that so that noone could steal his secrets; he was purposefully writing in a code.
