The harder I try...

...the worse I get.
I mainly throw (not sling) a tennis ball for my dog, to her its the greatest thing ever. I have found that I can put half the effort into throwing the ball and it goes just as far as if I try to throw my shoulder out of socket.
So I have applied this to the sling and found the same thing, but every once in a while I forget. So the harder I try.....

as have I.
I have an older injury and it flares up every time i go out and "try" to outsling my previous distances. Other days when I just have a few extra mins and am near a good place to sling a few, I can sling the same distance if not farther without even really trying.
Funny how that works huh...

I think the reason for this would be mostly due to the mass of the projectile. Since you're slinging a tennis ball it isn't going to go very far. So, if you throw your shoulder out, the extra velocity you put into the projectile isn't going to get it much further. It would, however, hurt your accuracy (and your shoulder
). If you were using a heavier object you would probably notice a greater difference in distance. I would doubt that it would really be worth it at all though. If you're uncomfortable while slinging your results probably won't be satisfying.

Its not much different throwing a light object as a heavy one as long as I try throw or sling it both ways. I understand that the heavier object will fly farther than a lighter one as far as throwing or slinging goes. I think what the deal is that slinging at an easy pace I have more controll than when I try with all of my effort. All boils down to technique.... maybe.....or maybe I just need to grow out my beard?

I have found slinging to be almost Zen like in that increased effort doesn't always effect the toss as much as focus and form. Don't try to make a super toss, just a smooth flowing throw will help improve both accuracy and distance.

There is a bok called something like "Zen and the art of archery". In the book it says that the human body is made up of many musle group and millions of musicle fibers but the human mind can only focus on very few of the groups at once. So it is best NOT to focus at all and LET everthing happen on its' own without concious effort.
I have never been able to do that.
