Is this the article you're talking about?

The sling doesn't look any different than most slings to me. The only difference I noticed was that the ends of the string weren't knotted off, but rather shut with a psuedo-splice. Here's the picture:

yes, that is it.  i modified the link to the shorter version.  it is sort of a splice, made my making cordage by twisting and folding in half, instead of using two different strands twisted together.  then, you would have that loop, and you could make a sort of sqaure knot when attaching the cords, as that is what is really going on.

i don't know about you guys, but when i use twisted strings, i have alot of trouble keeping the strings from twisting, especially with alot of windup.  with braided strings i don't have this problem.  i know why this is, but do you think that the indians had the same problem?

I have not tried twisted cordage before (except in making braids of multiple strands), so I do not know.  However, if twisting is a problem, then the Apache style is the solution: no windup!

I think he was talking about twisting the cordage to keep it together rather than having trouble with the cords tangling.

no, i did mean that the cords were made by twisting, and therefore could over twist and under twist, and then when you were holding the sling, the cords would twist around eachother, dumping the ammo.  the apache style would be good for keeping the cords from twisting.

but that could be another issue, the cords falling apart from untwisting too much during wind up.

The cords are first twisted and next doubled up so the twist stabelizes. It can not untwist and fall apart.

Take a simple piece of string and twist it till it wants to fold double and twist the other way round. Than you can see what I mean, if you tie a knot in the end of the doubled string you can not get the twist out.
If you untwist the final string the twist in the orrigional string gets higher.
