Moving targets?
Apr 15th, 2006 at 12:33am

I was just curious if anyone ever tries to hit flying objects. Slings were used to hunt birds. Any ideas on types of flying targets or ones that move on the ground.

There have been numerous threads in this forum about different types of moving targets that have been tried. they range from balloons to frisbees to younger siblings! Take a look through the forum, or just be creative. Sling Safe Wink

Using the many "buckshot" methods that have been on the forum in the past, you can probably hit birds in groups reasonably easily.  I've tried using tissue paper with pebbles in to see if the buckshot idea worked, and it certainly did.  I was trying before to think of a reasonable primitive alternative.  Large leaves would be good.

Seems to me that the method of hitting birds probably hasn't changed. Have a dog or young boy run up and scare the birds into flight. Fire off at the middle of the flock. Odds are you will hit something.
As for moving targets, this works with archery.
Make a target so that it can slide on a wire. String a wire up between 2 trees or posts at a slight downward angle, so that the target slides down the wire. ( Like a zip line) After that, rig up a trigger to let the target slide, then, have fun.

I like that Idea...just a bit too predictable for my tastes.

Take something really light like a tin pie pan, and use a light wire to string it up to a post or overhanging branch. Give it a whak to get it started, or just let the wind do the work.

Take a tin can, hang it up in a string outside in the wind.

Sling at the birds to make them flight, and then you have a moving target. Bigger birds are best, because the only place you can hurt them is in the head.

Maybe throw something that floats into a swiftly flowing stream, or roll a tire down a hill?

perhaps we could borrow some of person3's model rockets  Grin Tongue

Actually if you became insanely good with the sling or bow, model rockets would make very impressive targets. You can make then wicked cheap out of a few pieces of heavy paper, if anyone's interested I can give more information.

If you're not up for shooting it as it rockets upwards, you could install a simple parachute and have a slowly floating, slightly larger target.

actuly on larger birds the first option may just to take them out of flight. So as unhumantarian as it sounds a wing shot might be good. Also don't forget birds have light hollow bones a body shot will do great damage

I didnt mean to sound as though i was hunting birds. I just meant they used to, so what did they use to practice. Im dumb they probably just kept hunting and got good or got hungary thanks for the ideas though.
