traps/snares?
Apr 8th, 2006 at 8:30pm

i'm a complete newbie when it comes to setting traps, snares etc ???.
does anyone have some hints for some simple rope/string traps (not the metal ones which snap shut, but simple snares made out of rope.)?
BTW i'm from Australia, and the only animals to catch around here are rabbits, foxes, indian minors and drop bears. Wink

for small game like rabbits, try to go with deadfalls, google the 'figure four trigger' for ideas. They are the most humane and foolproof ones. Snares meant to kill rabbits and such may just injure or maim larger animals, that accidently get caught.

For bigger game you'd have to go with a snare if you're not planning on using logs as deadfalls. Only problem with that is that cord (especially metal wire) can slice through limbs, so if the animal escapes, it will suffer for a long while before dying. If you must trap large game for some reason, try to use more modern traps.

cando simply means that he doesn't like inhumane traps.  he likes a fast, painless kill.  not so the animal will live and be maimed for the rest of its life.

which might happen any time, it's just less justified with catch and release Wink
if you're concerned about hurting larger animals with snares, you might use some kind of weaker string that a large animal could break but which would catch a rabbit/fox...

or if you are concerned about catching the neighbor's cat instead of that coyoyte that keeps eating your chickens you can put a stopper on wire snares, so they can only close to a certain point.

Actualy snares are the last thing ya want to use if other animals might be present. You really need to use a havahart or make yourself a box trap. I use a lot of box traps and they are free to make.
