Introduction
Apr 5th, 2006 at 3:51pm

Greetings!

I just accidentally found this site, but I'm glad I did!  I've been slinging off and on since I was a kid, though never in as studied or practiced a way as alot of you here.  I actually got started because I hated my childhood chore of picking up walnuts off our lawn.  In the logic representative of my age, I figured I would reduce my chore time by picking the green ones off the tree and getting rid of them.  So, I made a sling out of leather bootlace and a patch of scrap leather and started figuring out how to use it (and how best to duck the ones that bounced back at me off the fence.)  Given my goal of disposing of walnuts, I mostly was going for range at that time, though I have since tried for accuracy as well.

After perusing your various how-to guides, I think I tried pretty much all the throws except for the Greek.  There wasn't alot of info on this available to an 8 year old in 1976, so I sort of had to wing it.  Once I got the hang of it, most of my throws were in the 100-150m range.

Since then, I have have made blowguns, boomerangs, and bows, and also played around with bolas and atlatls.  Slinging and archery remain my favorites, however, along with my other hobbies of historical fencing and woodworking with handtools.

Thanks for the welcome everyone Smiley

Tito:  I started slinging 30 ago, but haven't been active for all those 30 years, so I don't think I qualify as pretty good.  My accuracy is really not that good  Embarrassed

Roy:  My woodworking is mostly furniture and bows.

Mostly tables and desks, some chairs and benches, a few workbenches.  I've got an armoire and some builtin craftsmen style shelving on the to do list.

It sounds like you are a wood worker also?  What sort of woodworking, and what sort of bows?

Only once, when I couldn't find my other one and needed a temporary sling.  Otherwise I've only used leather, but have long wanted to try a braided one.  Seeing some of the pics in the gallery has started me thinking about that....

Nice work on those flintlocks, Roy!  I shoot a Yorkshire Arms matchlock in an English Civil War group.

I've only made selfbows so far, from maple, oak, cherry, and hickory/pecan.

ECWSA in my case, but our Leftenant lived in the UK for awhile and maintains his SK membership, so we haven't fallen that far from the tree.
