Call me Ishmael...no, wait a minute, thats wrong, innit? Been done before...
Okay, try this...call me Caveman Bob. (Thats better...). I reside in the lovely (cough) city of Akron OH (and I *wish* I were living in Orlando FL), and I have just started slinging. Been interested and curious about it since childhood (whenever *that* was...), finally did an online search on the subject, and discovered...this place. Yesterday (Friday March 17) I made my first very simple and basic sling, took it out to Goodyear Metro Park, and gave it a try. With the help of a passerby, a young sort who just happened to know something of the subject, I got the basic hang of it. After I lobbed my lithics, I stocked up on some stream tumbled stones, and I plan on lobbing them tomorrow, at the same park. Hopefully it won't be so breezy Sunday.
It's my plan to eventually make a braided sling...but I'll have to learn how to braid first.
Other related interests of mine is the atlatl (I have two, but I need to get some more darts sometime) and flintknapping. I've been a knapper for about two years now, and can turn out some creditable generic points, two of which I hafted onto bone for knives. Can't wait for it to become consistantly warmer so I can get some serious knapping done.
Places where I'd be slinging? Goodyear Metropark (well, it's close, innit?) here in Akron, and Waterworks Park in Cuyahoga Falls. See if I can get some rock wet in the Cuyahoga River...and no, I'm not worried about the stones melting in that river of ill fame. Actually, in the Cuyahoga Falls area, the river has a good rating.
