Compare Sling & Slinging Efficiency?
Mar 11th, 2006 at 2:46pm

As a small, scrawny, weak, uncoordinated old-guy, I'll never pitch as far as large, developed, strong, athletic youngsters.

However, with a good sling and technique, I should be able to  "multiply" my un-aided throwing distance as much as anybody!

For example, if I can hand-throw my favorite 3oz rock 60ft, but sling the SAME rock 300ft, I've multiplied my distance by 5 times.

If you can hand-throw your ammo (whatever you pick) 100ft, and sling it 500ft, you've ALSO multiplied your distance by 5 times.

Here's the rub.  Though you out-distanced me 40ft by hand and 200ft by sling, you're no better a slinger than I am.  To put it more accurately, your combination of technique and sling is no better or worse than mine.  This is because you didnt get any more "Multiplication" than I did.

No doubt our physical abilities vary widely in the group.  So, for really useable "apples-to-apples" comparisons of slings & techniques among us all, I suggest we adopt this "Multiplier Measure".

Whadaya think??

makes sense to me.

i just don't know how to measure distance on the water-surface, i'll have to throw one or two on the field, to see how good/bad i am.

(that is - as soon as my rotator cuffs get back in normal Tongue )

sounds like one good way to measure a slingers actual effieciency and skill. I've never gone all out (don't have enough of a range) but I don't expect it would be very good...

Distance is a great goal to strive for but I think accuracy is more important and is something that puts everyone on an equal footing. Smiley  Why don't we set a standard to try for?  Say......we all should try to be able to hit a 2 foot target at 50 feet to be considered a qualified slinger. ........and I mean being able to hit the target at least 6 out of 10 times. 8)

To be certified we have to have officials to do that.

I would love to travel to all people who want to be certified, and my fellow moderators would too, but who is going to pay for travel and time missed at work?

The sling is inherently a low cost, inexpensive weapon, a sort of "poor man's" weapon. What does this suggest about the financial status of Slinging.org members? Ouch!  ???   ...... ( dirt poor ) Dan

Dan is right.  It is a poor man's weapon.....but it's a rich man's sport.

Hmm, we could send in data, and video's

Now there is a possability for falshood, but it might also be alot of fun.

What would the certification say?

We can also trust our members as we have always done.

(I might not be dirt poor, but I do not have enough money to travel round to visit all members, however much I like the idea.)

Lobo ... "certified slinger"?  I was re-reading this
topic this morning and I saw that phrase ... now
I'm not sure, but I do know that you have shown
some signs of a twisty sense of humor ... might you
maybe possibly be saying that all us slingers are
CRAZY?

Would this be an average of 6 times out of 10, or would it be just once? For example, if someone slung 45 times and 6 of his last 10 hit, but he had a total of 23 out of the 45 hit (an average of about 5 out of 10), would this count?
