protect your braid
Mar 8th, 2006 at 11:03am

my braided sling is nearly 1 year old, and about to be retired.

the pics show the extent of wear, and also suggest the size of leather patch which will be needed to counter it.

it's  6.5 inch but 12 would be better  (just had deja vu there )

I used slings with leather pouch and string braided of wool. Now I use shoelaces because the cord got worn out too fast, and several times when I was going to check the condition of the sling before slinging, there were only 1 or 2 thin wool strings (in the whole braid it was 18 strings) keeping the sling together.

If you can get it, artificial sinew is nearly indestructable. I have a sling made from it from nearly 3 years ago, and it's still good.  Hemp is good too.

Hi

I sling almost anything I can find, a lot of rough stones too.
I protect the release cord by stitching a 5-10 cm part of thin leather from the pocket up to it.
This prevents the stones from scraping the cord and when the leather wears out, you change it for a new part.
Works perfectly.

Ask not what you can do for your sling... But what your sling can do to an armored knight on horseback at over 50 yards! Shocked

good idea, i've noticed that a couple of fibers are beginning to fray off the knots on my paracord slings. I'm just making the switch to smooth rocks though.

Hmm... I've never actually set out to buy materials specifically for making a sling, so I consider them free. But really it's the price of six feet of paracord bought 100 feet at a time, plus part of a boot thats been thrown out.

All of the slings that i make are apache style with a leather pouch and nylon cord or mason line. After a while the cord ,near the end of the leather pouch that the rock flies out of, begins to fray and tear. So on a new design i added an inch and a half to the end (extra flap) so it covers the cords and knot.
Ill see about getting some pics for better illustration.

so far, since i sewed a leather pouch onto my split pouch braided sling, i have not had any problems with fraying or dammage.  before i started using a leather pouch, and just the strings, i noticed some wear and tear and the release end.

Nylon and leather
that will work out for at least 1 one year using it constantly, it works for me while using apache and helicopter style.

/make it simple, it is often then it works out the best

Cotton is actually pretty strong.  It can fray a little with rougher stones, but if you use nice, smooth beachstones or similar, then cotton is a good material.

what if you grease the first ten or so centimeters ofter the pouch on the release cord?  that may make for reduced friction, maybe some better releases?

When I was slinging yesterday the fingerloop suddenly fell off, or the sling fell of the fingerloop. Luckily I didn't break any glass or kill any peoples, but just a tip to everyone: Check your sling before slinging! It might spare you for many bills!
