bottle slinging?
Feb 11th, 2006 at 1:41pm

has anyone ever tried slinging beer/soda bottles?  the glass ones?  i found one out in the woods and i kind of half tried to sling it, but it didn't go anywhere.  anyone have or heard of a pouch designed for hurling bottles of this shape?

Sounds like an idea. You could fill the bottle with volitile stuff and have even more fun. I'm thinking a very big, wide (2' x 1'), flexible pouch would hold a bottle.

Welcome to Slinging.org

Glad you are already exploring and pushing back the limits of slinging.

A bottle floating in water makes a really nice target.  Something to aim for helps focus your efforts and you can keep at it a lot longer than going for max distance every throw...

That said, most bottles seem to be designed to make them very hard to sling.  Anything with a long neck is a bear to balance.

I thought of making a special bottle sling but just decided to tie on a length of el-cheapo biodegradable twine and just hurl the whole project like a hemi bola.

If you do design a bottle sling we would all love to see pics.

what, you mean broken glass all in the wood or something?  i don't think that i would actualy be slinging bottles frequently or anything.  just onece or twice if i could actualy figure out how to make a sling for this kind of thing.  plus, i don't have enough bottles laying around to sling them frequently.  btw, everyone, i think that i might have an idea for a bottle sling.

Cuban guerillas used slings to launch fire bottles, so it is possible. I have slung a water-filled baby food jar few times with one sticking plaster pouched sling, 100% success rate(no disasterous throws, jars going behind me et cetera), but it didn't go very far.
No records about how many cuban slingers burned themselves to death are available.

Please don't throw antique bottles you find in the woods . You can always sell them and get good ammo Wink

Hmm. Slinging the bottles at those who so carelessly littered the earth with them. Thats what I would want to do.

I've got an idea how to make one. If I get time I'll post pictures tomorrow or the day after that.

Re:  Littering

I wouldn't advocate slinging bottles all over, But I sure do believe in recycling.  Dust to dust, sand to sand, whatever.  Those bottles are silica and should return to sand.  Problem is the the eroding process is hard to start on an intact bottle.  They need a slinger to make that initial break so the river and rocks can finish the job.

Ok, here I've got some pictures of my bottle sling.
It started very much more complicated, but I ended up with this way here. It works for 0,5 and 1,5 liter bottles, but I haven't checked with beer boxes.

I made a video too. I was that lucky that just when I made the film, my clocks started to ring.  Roll Eyes

This thing I made isn't like a regular sling, but it does work!
