Help Making a Pouch
Feb 5th, 2006 at 7:08pm

Guys,

I was taking a look at the slings in the Museo de la Honda.  Well, can anyone tell me how you make one of the pouches such as:

http://perso.wanadoo.es/hondero/sling30.htm

or

http://perso.wanadoo.es/hondero/sling14.htm

????

I'm mainly interested how you get the seperate loops on the sides for the braided cords to attach to, as they just look like their woven in between.

TIA,
Adam

I've wondered about the second one as well. It really looks like the weft is twined - with two strands spiraling about the warp (lengthwise threads). THis would be a nice tough, mechanically solid pouch fabric, but I haven't seen much evidence of this type of weaving. Notice that the chevrons are running along the pouch, as if it was knit (which I'm almost certain it isnt - though it could be Wink)

The first looks like pretty standard "basketweave" weaving. They've separated and possibly added to the cord strands, and woven a simple over-and-under pattern. It looks like the main cords are split into two groups before the pocket to allow for a wider "cupped" pouch.

If you look back through the archives, you'll see examples of sling construction that uses similar techniques, with different results. Most of this design work is specific to only one or two surviving slings - maybe there was as much experimentation back then as there is now!  8)
