Smiley The 'battle' would be interesting. Smiley What is the shooting range, anyway?

Maybe you can stuff the arrowhead with cotton wool, then wrap with cloth to minimize the damage. And everyone, slingers and archers, wear some kind protection,i.e. goggles, helmets, neck protection, hats, etc.

I think it's not fair for slingers as bouncy balls won't fly as far as lead and stones.

It would have to be like a live action roleplay. But, as compensation for reducing bow weight (to avoid serious injury), I suggest the slingers get shorter slings. And that you cant snipe at anyone past 45 yards.

Someone name one place historically where the sling won over the bow. Info would be nice.

I say just the oppisite  let keep the range no closer than 1 hundred yards in fact between 100 - 300 yards
making sure the slinger and archers are no closer 100 yards
like i said slingers using waited tenniss balls peferably with water. The acheres using half or quarter tennis balls
dip ammo in paint so we know hits  I think 45 yards or closer might be dangerous besides that for the mele boys If we really wanted. we could have mele fighters in that middle hundred yards

speaking of draw weight, would a compound bow 30# @ 20" do any damage?

dosn't this topic sound like something that would be horrendously botched up by myth busters?

Hellfire,
Here is one that I remember off the top of my head. Antony was trying to retreat out of Parthia and was having a hard time dealing with the horsearchers. Here is a quote:

"Near there he lost his siege train, and with the greatest difficulty, and thanks to his powerful corps of slingers, beat off the Parthian horsearchers."

I'm game if anybody wants to try this in Washington state or even Oregon or BC.

I wouldn't worry too much about the padding. I got hit with a dowel arrow at 20 yards from a 50# bow. The arrow was tipped with a wad of pipe insulator and duct tape. Hurt, but no injury.

For the slingers, I'd say raquetballs filled with caulking would do well.

Good idea, but something tells me that blunt arrows are still going to hurt

Well there is no real way to eliminate toatl pain, but it is possible to reduce it so we could try these;

I think the only way they did beat them is that the hores are bigger targets and if they are hit they will freak out and run away.

unless the bows your talking about are greater then 75 pounds or like 10 feet away the 1/4 tennisball tip should keep it from hurting bad.  i was hit in the chin with a hunting bow from a 30 feet with this type of arrow and i was able to recover and shoot him in the ancle as he ran away.  it doesnt hurt that bad at all
