Exercise: Dynaflex & Gel Balls

I picked up this gyroscopic exerciser at a sports store.
The gyroscope is weighted and spins on a axle that also rotates like a universal joint.
The little rip cord gets it started, then you rotate your hand & forearm back and forth (supinate & pronate) and the gizmo picks up speed. The gyroscope starts a rotary precession movement that pulls your hand around and exercises your whole hand and arm. The faster it goes, the stronger it pulls. Extend your arm and it works the whole shoulder girdle. Sounds like nuts, but if you ever see one, pick it up and try it out. You won't be able to put it down until your arm starts hurting.
On a simpler and more familiar note little gel squeezeballs are good for grip strengthening and make fine soft ammo too.

Gel balls are easy to throw and really demonstrate spin.
They flatten out perpendicular to the spin axis into a discoid shape like a red blood cell.
I caught some slung to me by my bro-in-law. Really fun to watch them come out of the sky at you.
Much more fun than something hard or lumpy like a rock.
Not the best for distance throwing, but great for games.

I am afraid I will sound like an absolute cheapskate
. But I use a rubber ring, which I get for about a dollar, you squeeze it in your hand, it is more compact that squeezeballs, but I would love to get two of them, because you can "claw" into them.

Most Dyna-Flex I've seen are around $20
I'm using one to try to build up elbow / forearm strength since I tend to have tennis/pitchers elbow problems if I sling too much or too hard.
The Dyna-Flex does provide a gentle resistance for a workout .
Probably need to warm up longer before I throw.

That actually begs the question, and how do you guys warm up. Do you swing your arms use a sqeeze ball, jump jacks, stand on your head? What do you do I'd lke to know.

I wave, swing and rotate my arms, make a few cartwheels, few shadowboxing punches and I am good to go. Often I just swing my arms few times in big circles and that's it.

Found this baseball site with pitcher training info. Looks
aplicable to slinging, at least for us overhand types.
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/bookdr1.shtml
Chapters 20, 21, 22 & 24 Look good for my particular training needs.

Very interesting, this makes me consider how I launch my glades. I use the side arm under-hand technique. I believe it's called the "Greek throw". (someone please correct me it I'm wrong) I tend to give the projectile just a little more 'Umph' right before release. I'm not sure if this helps with speed or not, however my arm gets sore alot faster when I do this. I'm wondering if this a result of unused muscles getting training, or if I'm straining my arm.
The guide you posted (I only briefly skimmed through it) seems to suggest applying steady force, for as long as possable. Ths makes me reconsider what I thought might be training. How do you think I should train myself?

I use the exercise stuff when I'm stuck away from a slingspot. Handy to keep a gel ball in the car--they're great to pass the time and blow off steam in traffic. Dynaflex is fun while waiting at kids B-ball or soccer practices.
I try to warm up with some shoulder rotations and start with low power 30-50 percent for the first five or six throws.
Throwing rocks, I use suboptimal ones for these warmups. Less likely to go straight to full power while using cruddy rocks. I also warm up with some rocks before switching to glandes.
I try to find situations where 50-75 percent power throws are rewarding. With a sling I get about 80 percent of max distance with 50 percent power throw. Getting that last 20 percent distance really costs me in shoulder or arm fatigue.
Also important to warm down with light throws, stretching, etc
Throw with all your heart, but save some of your arm and shoulder for later.
