for tying the rungs in, use a butterfly loop or  artillery knot. you don't need a free end of the rope to make them, and they won't slide/are very strong. i've made good rope ladders out of the artillery loop but the butterfly looks even better

And it would probably also twist less, FunSlinger, being wider at the bottom you could anchor it so much better.

Plus you could slack it up and use it as a hammock.
