Rope Ladders...
Jan 16th, 2006 at 1:14pm

Anyone know a way to make efficient, strong rope ladders? I need one, since I had a ladder to a loft like space in my room, but it's almost broken. I need to build a ladder of some sort. I have 3 ropes with the length of 14 ft, and the width is 1 inch. The loft is about 6-7 ft up from the ground.

Buy that book it shows how to make different knots or ask the Knot geniouse(Willke) There is one knot but i forgot it's name that is perfect for making rope ladders.

Hows your upper body strength? Wink

I would hang two rops down from the top. I would then knot those two ropes at each place you want a rung.

then i would cut some of the ropes into smaller parts and tie them at above the knots.

That might work Smiley

Yup, heard of it, but it wasn't much help. As for your idea, Douglas the Black, I'll try your idea in a few days when I have more spare time, and I'll post the results.

http://www.scoutingresources.org.uk/pioneering_ladders.html - For simple half hitch type and wooden runged sort. If you use wooden rungs, I'd recommend drilling a hole through the planks for security.

There are any number of knots you could use if you are going to make the rungs out of rope. Particularily if you are going to back up the knot with a half-hitch below.

http://www.webstile.ch/knoten/rigging/ch2.pdf - Page 44 for spliced rope rungs.

Depending on the type of rope you have, the splicing can be done different ways. 3 strand laid rope is easy and looks "fancy" with a bit of work. Braided line you might need to figure to a way to make a fid to do the work, but the splices are faster to make.

If it were my ladder, I'd go with spliced rope rungs, but  it's up to the user!

The trick with google is to be specific - ["rope ladder" knot instructions] (for example) might work better for you.

I would spend a little and try to get a reliable second hand ladder. (Beg your parents?)
It is possible to make a reliable ladder, but it is not beginners work and it is your health and safety.

If you want to go on with making a ropeladder, go to the IGKT forum and ask the specialists there, (I do mainly decorative work.)

Oops, the seconf link in my reply above was wrong. Fixed now.

http://www.webstile.ch/knoten/rigging/ch2.pdf

Willeke is right about the safety aspect. Ladders, railings and overhead lifting rigging are all things that need to be carefully built, kept up, and checked through regular inspections. A rope ladder might also be inappropriate for use in your room as the climber always swings in toward the wall - I imagine boot-holes in the plaster might make you less popular than might be best...

Yes, I know about the safety thing. Its not that bad of a fall, and I'll probably move my bed mattress under where I'm going to put the ladder to cushion my fall, if I fall, which I hope I will not.

A rope ladder will get you up and down. But if you want to bring something with you it will be very hard.
So a pioneered ladder will be more usefull. But for long term using a wooden ladder with propper wood connections and nails and glue is so much more reliable that I would not go for pionering.

But if you want to make a ropeladder for fun, look on the knot sites to get the best information for the kind of rope and situation you have.

An easy way to make one is, start with a stout piece of rope, ( should be obvious) and get some 3/4 inch oak dowel rods, about nine inches long. Place the rods on the rope, and tie a square knot around them, so that the rod becomes a rung.
Do this until you have a rope long enough. Tie a weight at the end.
To Use, tie the nonweighted end to something heavy ( think this out ahead of time, that's being prepared.) then simply toss it ou the window. Use the rungs to climb down.
You can also diagonal lash the rods on the rope, in addition to the square knot, if you want additional security.

I've made a rope ladder using some clove hitches around large diameter dowels with a stopper knot underneath and a smaller dowel glued in (crosswise) to keep the rope on.  This worked for the treehouse my friends and I built as a kid.  Although there are probably better and safer ways to do it.   A rope ladder would be fun but they are hard to keep from twisting when you climb even when they are well secured on the top and bottom.

Another thing you might try is just a single large diameter rope and some climbing knots like a Prusik or those little devices the scientists use for climbing into the jungle canopy.  Just a thought.  If you do any of these, just becareful!

Now what would be REALLY fun would be a fireman's pole to slide down.  I always wanted one of those.  I could never convice my parents to drill a hole in the floor though.  (I wonder why ?  Shocked )

I saw a show on the Travel Channel on extreme homes and in this mansion the owner built a huge open semi-spiral staircase out of mahogany.  The really cool part about it, is that integrated into the side of the staircase was a slide (like those fiberglass water slides).  Also built out of solid mahogany.  Can you say big bucks, boys and girls?!

the firemans poll, those are fun. the little 3rd graders hate it when i wont let them have a turn. Its hard to climb up them, so maybe a rope ladder and a firemans pole? Grin

The worst thing is to destroy stairs, make a fireman's pole and slide down, then realize you aren't strong enough to climb back Roll Eyes.
The knot for ladders is caled artillery knot I think. If the rope is thick and stout enough, you can just tie these knots on one piece of rope and they will form loops to put your foots in.
