Another Bow Question...
Jan 8th, 2006 at 11:44pm

I'm sure I could make myself more clear if I knew the words, but I don't, so please be patient.

When you string a bow, the sting sits a certain distance behind the handle. Is there a certain recommended distance that this should be?

I'm guessing it should be far enough away so your free hand can knock an arrow, but close enough so your bow doesn't snap when you shoot it. Is there a guidline for this?

Its called brace height, and it all depends on the bow you are shooting.  On most selfbows its usually around 6", on recurves it can be 8"-9".  Start out with a 6 inch brace height and work up from there.

If your arrow is going back and forth need to change your brace height and if its going up and down you will need to change your nock point.  Or it all could be a bad release. Grin

So here's another question...

When people say, "50lbs draw @ 28in" do they mean that the string is drawn back 28 inches from the handle, or the string is drawn back 28 inches from it's original point?

fistmele is a measurement for brace height. It is generally 5 1/2 to 6" brace height.

if you like archery in general, go to

Lots of bow stuff there, dig around in the archives.
