Flaming stones!
Dec 30th, 2005 at 4:05pm

Haha, I found a perfect way to make flaming stones, easy and cheap!

Here's what you need:
  • A small stone, 2-3 cm diameter
  • Cotton, like the ones you use removing makeup
  • A piece of an old cotton sheet, about 15 cm x 20 cm
  • A piece of sandwich paper, 50 cm x 50 cm (Or some other paper easy to work with and strong enough)
  • Twine, about 2-3 meters
  • Methylated spirit (or lamp oil)

Here's what you do:
  • Wrap the stone in cotton
  • Whip twine around it to hold it in place
  • Roll the cotton sheet piece to a sausage looking thing, and tie a little twine around it making it not roll up.
  • Lay the cotton sheet sausage 1/2 times around the stone/cotton ball, fasten it with some twine, but let there be a long end left not tied to the ball
  • Wrap the whole thing in sandwich paper like typical sweets, but the cotton sausage stick out of one end. This end should not be tied tight, but the other end shall be as tight as possible.
  • Pour methylated spirit in the end where the cotton sausage comes out, but try to get as little as possible outside, so that the whole thing is dry outside. The cotton around the stone should be well soaked in methylated spirit, but not so that if you hold it with the cotton sausage downward it ripps a liter out of it.

When you have done this, lay the flaming stone/cotton ball in the sling, have a lighter ready and put fire to the cotton sausage. Wait a little so that it wont stop burning when you throw it, and fire away!

When I tried it didn't stop burning in the air, and not when it hit the ground. Even when it was laying in halfways up in melted ice it didn't stop burning.
I've made two of these till now, and they sure work!
If somebody else try, I'd like to hear how it went!

Wrap it in wax paper, then it would not drip for sure, but you must be quicker with launching, because wax paper, as you surely know, catches fire with delight Smiley.

I used sandwich paper because it burns easily,  but not too fast either, and it's easy to work with.
Wax paper, uhm I'm not sure what that is, but I know sandwich paper is waxed.
I throw it on the road here, in the evening/night there are almost no cars, and it's 5 cm ice, so no problem about spreading.
Pics, ok I'll get some! Roll Eyes

Sounds like a good way to help melt ice off your roof.

Something else you could try is to make a stink bomb, which they did have. I would suggest using either a mass of rolled up horse hair, or shavings from a hoof or horn. Believe me, these things stink when they burn!

Using lead weights would be better than stones, since you need a bigger stone to get the same weight as a smaller lead gland, but even with lead glands the whole thing would be quite big. Those I have made is 4-5 cm thick, and the whole length with the cotton sausage is 17 cm.

I slung one more today, but I threw it too hard, and it hadn't got really fire on it, so it stopped midair, landing on the neighbours roof. Just luck I got the roof not a window, and lucky it's 15 cm snow too so he didn't hear it! Roll Eyes

I'll soon have a picture ready, I've sent it to Chris.

I didn't understand what you mean, Doug... Embarrassed

I do actiually have some horse hair. Hmm... Roll Eyes
I think if you packed the cotton ball in horsehair befor wrapping it in sandwich paper, it would stink!
I fired some just now outside, together with the rockets. For me here in Norway it's the year 2006 now! Grin
Happy New Year!

Haha, there has been 2006 for two hours now, my watch says 02.17! Roll Eyes

The biggest problem with those glands was that if I threw as hard as I can, they stop burning. So what I was thinking was making some kind of a little protection around the fire, made of aluminium paper. Hmm, you'll see what I mean when we get the pictures!

Horse hair is easy to burn, just like your own hair is. Besides, smoldering hair just makes the stink last longer.
Hooves and cow horn should be almost like woodshavings thin. It works better that way. I have a friend that has made medieval stink bombs ( I'm the one that got him into it. His wife isn't speaking to me) and we found out that works best.

Does he make his wife come outside and smell them?
"Hey Honey come quick I want to show you something"
<wife steps outside>

"It REALLY stinks doesn't it?!  I made that!!  Cool, huh?"
<wife rolls her eyes and walks back inside>

Or is he brave stupid enough to try it inside?
