crossbow design
Dec 12th, 2005 at 7:47pm

hi i thought instead of using flexible limbs on a crossbow use a stock with a solid bow but have a system of pulleys and a spring to create the force,
somthing like this

     o--------////////-------o
      \             ll            /
        \           ll          /
          \         ll        /
            \       ll      /
              \     ll     /
                \   ll  /
                    ll
                    ll
                    ll
                    ll
                    ll

the onley bit im stuck on is the firing mecanism i cant think how to make a simple one ???

The release mechanism is the big problem with crossbow, cause tou have to relaese high energy with a minimum effort.

If your crossbow is low powered, you could just make a slot in the stock where the string will rest when the crossbow is cocked, and place a rod through the stock to push up the string and relaese (use in chineese crossbow).

If your crossbow deliver a lot of energy, use a nut. Google "nut crossbow medival", i am sure you will usefull information.

I am also thinking about pulleys for both crossbow and "experimental" slingshots. Got some ideas, but no time to experiment for the moment.

Keep in touch.

Regards

Joseph
