What can you make out of a railroad spike ? (Read 12045 times)

Nov 18^th, 2005 at 1:03pm I've heard of smiths making throwing hachets out of railroad spikes . Knifes too . I made a Rope dart out of one . Is the steel worth it ? Its 40 to 45 carbon steel . I don't know where the decimal point goes but can they be hardened

Reply #1 - Nov 18^th, 2005 at 9:28pm Yeah they can be hardened how well I dont know though, have seen some nice knives with twisted handles, also saw a sweet war hammer (war club) made with one as a head.

I like the cross armed dagger and the ax . How long did it take you to make this pieces ? How did you form the eye of the ax . Did you buy pre-formed tool to forge the eye into shape ?

Hammear a couple spikes through, and you've got a nasty, orc-style spiked club Having acess to horseshoe nails and 6 inch long fence nails, i think i'll try it myself

I make all my own tools. but I did copy the drift from one a fellow black smith had. The long thin sword up there is 27 inches long 1/2 inch wide and from a single spike. the bowie is also from a single spike. I dont have a better pic of it as it was sold shortly after being made.
I make at least thirty differnt items from rail road spikes
both the high carbon and the low carbon ones
The axes take about 45 mins to forge the daggers take about two hours to forge. that not including the white work (polishing,sanding ect) or the heat treating

That's just in case there's a hole in both of your socks, or they don't have enough sand inside them, you can't find that bar of soap in your L.B.E., etc.
