Ferrocerium rods

I just got one, and boy does it ever work great!  The shower of sparks can easily light up dry grass and leaves.  Not primitive but it is waterproof and cool!

what is it and what does it do. Had a very long week, very long morning and really can't muster the energy to look it up on the net :-)
Plus I've got to save my energy for watching the world series.
Average game finish in england is 3-4 AM.
I'll admit I tend to watch most of them on video the next day, but I still have to make the time and I haven't missed a ws game in 5-6  years :-)
And I'll be damned if I'm going to miss the rocket on the opening game :-)

It is a strip of metal that produces white hot sparks when struck and is totally weatherproof,  armies around the world use them.

Sounds awesome! I'm thinking of a 50 foot long one with a 200 hp engine and you use it as a weapon. Where do you get one?

so what exactly are you scraping down the side of this 50 foot long rod ? And where does the engine come in ?
I'm intrigued :-)

Well I'm thinking that the huge engine spins a giant high carbon steel wheel very fast, and it scrapes against the rod, and makes lots of sparks. Pure fictional, as I can't find the money to do it, but if anyone else wants to, please do.
