table top siege engines
Sep 11th, 2005 at 10:21am

Interesting thing happened this weekend. Some friends of mine had a table top catapult contest. The idea was to knock down a tower of Jenga bricks at 5 10 and 15 feet.
Most went with either the counterweight trebuchet, or a torsion catapult ( onanger). Here I was with my little man powered perrier.
The problem with both counterweights and the torsion ones is each requires some tricky adjustments for distance.
Aperrier is simple, and just requires a slight pull to work. Guess who knocked down the tower??

Quote the contest organizer " I never thought that that thing would work. It looks too simple" HEHEHEH

Perrier is a brand of sparkling water.  Non alcoholic.  But a perrier, in this context, is a siege engine like a trebuchet, but without a weight and pulled by hand.

I knew perrier is sparkling water but I'm pretty sure there is a champane (I don't think I spelled that right, did I) by that name.
I did a little searching before techstuf posted and I found a machine called a perrier. Very sketchy at best. But it seemed to be like the trebuchet the chinese first used. Traction trebuchet I think they were called.
Sounds the same as a perrier, is it?
Like I said before, you got any links or pics?

The actual staff of the catapult is 12 in. long. All together, its about 15 in high. The main support is one single beam, ith a wide groove in the top for the beam. A peg holds the beam in place. The proportion of the beams balance point is essential to the efficiency of the throw. Too much beam on one side of the balance point screws it up. Undecided
My Scouts made a full size version of this once, and didn't believe that the proportion made that big a difference. I let them fool with it, and they found out the hard way that prpoer balance proportion is the most important thing Grin

The table top one I can put together in a few hours. The big one took time, since we had to cut the wood. It was all lashed together for a catapult competition at a Klondike. The thing that took the longest was weaving the sling
Of course the problem was at the competition, is that we had to fire uphill. Apparently, the Troop running it thought that that wouldn't affect the distance of the throws. ( Clearly, they didn't do research). Even still, we came in firs, before more elaborate counterweight trebuchet designs. Some found out also that torsion catapults (onanger) don't work well in the snow, because the rope is so weather sensitive. Oh well.

A month. This gave me the time to make corrections and figure out a good way of improving the accuracy.
