thanks for the welcomes and commendations guys.
i've since braided up a nice little split pouch sling from information gained here, it performs considerably better with the gravel around here than my sheepshank model, but once i make up some heavier clay or concrete balls (good idea from the 50second bullet article!) i'm betting the sheepshank sling will be more enjoyable.
next sling though is gonna be modeled on the Whirling Hurler, that is a nice mature looking design.

be_slinger, i'm interested in that picture you posted, when i get offline i'm gonna play around and figure out how the 5 stringed version you've shown works.

cool Thori,  i've had a little trouble with the weaving catching on my poor quality rocks (gravel) which causes occasional delayed releases, but i think this would not be an issue with smoother stones.

I copied your post to a Microsoft word program for future reference . The photos of your slings knots sequence is fantastic . I'm making one today  Cheesy

Have you considered making an article for this website ?I think your post qualifies as a permanet article .

I've taken your story about beaning your friend in the head to heart . I'm glad he survived . I'm going to make my brother in law read it as he uses the "helicopter" throw and it makes me nervous . I imagine it would be OK after the sling and his technique are proven by himself far far away or with lightweight balls . I use the underhand throw currently and I won't change my technique until I'm alone.

Thanks for the inspiration . Grin

Thanks neolyth.  I am going to try that design!

Cool story too!  I think highly of both you and your friend that you could remain friends.

I figured both of these slings listed in this thread would be good to try.  I don't have any leather yet so I figured I'd try the second design listed.  The one with the shoelace weaved around the sheepshank knot.

However, I am a bit confused about the knot(s) to use.  I know I should start out with a sheepshank and that part is easy.  After that the author mentions bowlines and sheetbends but I'm not exactly sure which or how they fit in.  Do I need both of these knots on each end?  Maybe some of you knot-hounds can help me out here.

Is this really the same knots as the
article
by Mark Lund with the addition of a shoelace weaving for the pouch?  I found Mark's directions quite easy to follow.

Thanks
Brian

They are the same knot, structurally. The difference comes in with how the "free" ends are used. If you tie a bowline, for instance, and then cut the loop, you end up with a...

Best not to worry about names (unless you like to, in which case head over to the IGKT and go nuts - Willeke has a link on her site) and just tie the knot the way you are most comfortable doing so. The image sequence and the article give you all the info you'll need!

I've made it, but the shoe laces I used was too thick, so the pouch is too stiff.
It still looks cool though! Roll Eyes

pouch is supposed to be pretty stiff really so it grabs the projectile a bit better (of course it has to still be able to bend around it  Grin

The cords on the sling Im using right now are incredibly thick and stiff. I like the stiffness better Wink

...ignorant in way of knot he claims, yet consumed young DtB becomes. Beckons does the path... ...

Ok so the picture I bumped up from the first page shows a setup for the knots - you still need to pass the cords through the "loops" to finish the job. Check out the original post for the sequence.
