One Strap Sling
Mar 22nd, 2005, 4:56pm

Has anyone else ever tried to make a one strap sling. I think there is huge potential in replacing the release strap with a release latch that is controled from the retaining strap, perhaps make it out of bicycle brake cable. I experimented with one design but was suprised to find I could hardly shoot without the follow threw that I am used to.

Do you think that would increase the performance of the sling?  There is no doubt that that would work but why?

You could shoot in the woods, maybe reload faster. You could avoid tangles, or hittiing the ground and getting the strap wet or dirty. Removing the friction created by the release strap could create faster more accurate shots. The sling could be locked and loaded all the time, and never worry about dropping your ammo.

I see.

You might want to take a look at Mitch Robinson's sling in the gallery:

http://www.slinging.org/gallery2.html

The pics are in the very bottom.  He used a gun shape release device and a retention ring to keep the cords together.  It is not one strap but the retention ring is suppose to keep the cords from tangling, keep the release cord close to your hand after release, and also keep the stone in the pouch.

good luck with your design and please keep us updated in you finds! Wink

I saw that trigger thing and was interested in what it was. Did he ever write an article about it?

I don't know of any article.  I figure it is a four cord sling with a trigger release and retention rings.

Hi Mark,

I had actually considered the 'brake cable' design at one point.  Way back in 1987, I believe.  Proved a bit cumbersome for my tastes.  I was much more enthusiastic then.....

I settled on a 2 cord design (becoming four near the pocket)with the aforementioned retention loops at top and bottom.  One to retain the release cord near the sling hand and the other to cinch the pocket and keep both cords tightly together as a single unit during launch.

What isn't these days, huh?   Actually, for their intended purpose, which is to tightly secure a 1" lead or steel sphere and release it with little spin, they will last nearly forever.  I try and keep extras around......I never know who's coming to dinner.

And might want one for themselves.

So the sphere goes threw the straps and the front strap can't interfer with the projectile. Is this your favorite sling or just one of many experiments.

Mark,

Although I use that configuration more than any other,  It is no longer my favorite....by a long shot. (Pun not consciously intended)

Stay tuned....
