How can you tell the bad from the good anyway? Some look so well crafted.

weight, balance, functional swords are light and well balanced. If they are able to give you info on the steel and manufacturing. If they dont make claims about cutting through concrete. If they are not stainless. If they let you handle the sword. If they have a return policy. I would suggest that before you shell out the cash you do some research. Sword forum international is a good place to start also Axe forum.

cold steel is one of the worlds best knife making companies. they also make othere tools like axes and warhammers and swords. SO far they are the best made weapons i have ever used. they give info on the steel they do all sorts of stuff.

go to there web site
www.coldsteel.com
and order there free catalog and dvd. Its realy realy cool. they use the 2 handed great sword to swing into a cow and with 2 hits they cut it in half. they do cuts on real meat too. makes me wonder where they got that meat. most of its like a $50 side of beef. good swords good meat you cant lose!

i don't know much about steel and refining and all that, but I can generally tell a good knife if I get to handle it.  Never bought a sword before though.

I'll have to agree with douglas the black that cold steel rocks!

There may be some hand forged stuff out there that are better but the chances are against it.

I'd go for a long dagger or samurai sword. I know someone who got a dagger a samurai sword and a long knife from Ebay. The sheaths came with them and they were covered in rattlesnake skin. Over that the blades themselves were as sharp as hell. So if any "badguys" raided your house you'd be able to lope off there heads.
