There are many types of round house - so exactly what do you mean? The only types of dwelling that I make that are round are wigwams, my favourite dwellings, domes of saplings, covered with bark, so if you want to make a wigwam, here's the info about the fire.
Basically, because bark is easily cut to many different sizes, you just make a small sheet that you remove in the middle of the dome to act as a chimney.  It tends to be small enough that light rain doesn't affect the fire, but the flap can obviously be closed in heavy rain.  Fairly simple solution.

That's a great site. I went to the Butser Open Air Museum on the outskirts of London. This may be where they took the pictures on the Gallica website. Butser certainly has a lot of that kind of building.

Anyway, when you thatch a building like this, there are inevitably little cracks in the thatching; that, and the high ceiling, tend to lead the smoke out the right way.

Butser is not on the outskirts of London.  It's where I went to learn flintknapping, and they have some crazy looking sheep.  It's in Hampshire.  Plenty of nice buildings; the round houses do look nice, and suited to the environment, but they are very dark inside even with a big fire.
