Ive got the Buckskinning handbook volume .
Its got plenty on bows, guns, blacksmithing and such.

Id still rather do a sling gallery thing, instead of a bow.

or even a cannon.....

A longbow can be a bow that is long.  It is easier to make than a short bow.  So, indeed, go for a longbow on your first go.  Important thing is to not cut into the back, for a beginner.  Getting the rest right is important, but that is probably the most important initial rule.

Crossbows are fun.
just remember dont let your dumb little sister help tillering your longbow, sheel be stoopid and take off a lot of wood and make your bow from a nicely manageable 45 puond pull to about fifteen. Stoopid dopehead

Well you don't just type in a number, that's for sure.  Basically, poundage is determined by the width, thickness, length, &c, of the limbs on the bow.  To find the poundage of the bow, just put a long string on it (longer than the bow.  Called a tillering string) and then put it on a big plank of wood, put that on some scales and then draw the bow.  That way you end up with an accurate drawweight for your bow.
I like crossbows.  But I've never had one break on me before.

id just do pounds-pull from a bow by taking a relatively high level fish scale and pull back, make your dumb brother check the pounds, unless you are a contortionist and can look behind you

Well, if you have no one to help you or aren't a contortionist, then the best method is the one described above.
Don't drill a hole through the bow!  If you do that for a crossbow prod, I'm not surprised it broke.  Just lash it on with maybe a joint.  Not too difficult.
