Slinger defeats a Hun
Sep 14th, 2004 at 1:01pm

Procopius of Caesarea wrote:
"Now one of the Huns who was fighting before the others was making more trouble for the Romans than all the rest. And some rustic(he was a shepherd)made a good shot and hit him on the right knee with a sling, and he immediately fell headlong from his horse to the ground, which thing heartened the Romans still more."
This battle took place around the 6th century between Huns and Byzantines under Belisarius, one of the greatest generals of all times. Belisarius also used Huns in his army with great effect. Defeating Goths, Vandal and other Germanic tribes. His key to success was a combination of heavy cavalry and horsearchers(Huns).

I'm a bit confused about the quote.  Did a hun with a sling hit a Roman General?  Did it wound/kill him?  Do you know anything about what extent slings were used by the Huns?  Any information would be interesting.

I am not comfortable with the idea of Romans defeating Huns.  The Huns were fabulous people, much maligned, acting out early against the ravages of civilisation and ultimately, consumerism.  I really believe this.  Attila was one cool guy.

The Hun got hit.
Consumerism? The Western Roman empire was basically in an impovershed state by the 5th century. The story of barbarians migrating into civilization is the story of have-nots wanting the benefits of civilization. Remember, the Huns could be placated with much gold!

Yeah, but they'd still rather be killing Romans than shopping at a supermarket.  The Romans may have been impoverished but they were still Romans, trying to spread their way of life.  Good on the Huns.  And you must remember, if it wasn't for the Huns destroying Roman civilisation, the Saxons etc would not have entered England as easily.  So I, you, and lots of others would not be here.
Stop destroying my romantic dreams of Hunnic life. Embarrassed
Seriously though... the Huns were very cool people.  I find all nomadic life very interesting - that is how I would live if I could, moving all the time, taking advantage of seasonal change...  It would still be nice to destory civilisation and live like that. Screw medecine, Donald Trump, et al.  I wanna be in a yurt.
