Cement Ammo
Sep 2nd, 2004 at 8:43am

I just got a 40lb bag of quick-curing cement mix.  It says it is for setting mailboxes and other posts in the ground.  This mix is just a gray powder with no visible sand or gravel included.

Instructions say mix with 1gal of water, and sets in just 10minutes.   It cost $4 at Menards.

IF it is moldable, I figure about 300-350 approx 2oz weight glandes out of the $4 bag, which is pretty cheap custom-made ammo.   MUCH cheaper than potters' clay.

Anybody have any experience using this material to make glandes?  Any secrets for success??

Let us know how this works out. I still think that cement/mortar ammo might be the best option (at least for those of us who can't recover every shot) One thing to be careful with is that cement can give you nasty chemical burns.

When it's wet, yet. Make sure and wear gloves or your hands will feel extremely dry and caked, even after washing the cement off.

One time I got a little blob of wet cement in my eye. OW OW OW!

Sounds like a good idea.  Obviously lead will fly better, but concrete would be a much cheaper way t o practice technique and build strength.
Another safety thing about concrete: I've heard that working with bare hands can sometimes get concrete in your pores, where it'll harden and leave you groaning on the couch with plastic bags full of vasoline on your hands.  Definately want to wear gloves.
Tell me how it turns out! Smiley

I had a buddy in slinging that used tennis balls slightly sliced in half. He would pour quickcrete into the tennis ball and then close the mold. To make the molded ball easier to handle he would put a bit of string though the mold . Then he would spray paint the cement balls red to make them easier to track.

I may try the tennis ball mold but with the mini tennis balls found at walmart. They seam to be about the right slinging size.

An 80lb bag of concrete is about $3Re: Cement Ammo

Here is the cost I came up with a year ago when we were discussing this:

An 80lb bag of concrete is about $3
A ball formed from a tennis ball weighs 5.8oz
80lbs x 16oz = 1280 oz
1280 div by 5.8 = 220.69 balls per bag
$3 div by 220.69 = about 1 and 1 third cents per ball
Add to this a couple of weekends time

Do a search on Concrete Balls and you will find some ggos pointers.

Mortar is much softer and light weight compared to concretr.

Here's how the "quickcrete"  mix experiment has worked out so far.

1/ 3 tablespoons of mix + 1 tablespoon of water makes a soupy mess that will pour, but that is NOT plastic in the least bit, and therefore very difficult to hand-mold.

2/ The 3 Tbsp of mix + 1Tbsp of water amounts, when set & dry, yield 60gram pieces; just right for me.  It measured right at 3" long and 1" diameter through the fattest part.

3/ The mix does contain some fine sand.  This makes the glande surface quite abrasive, which could cut the service life of sling pockets and release cords.

Next step is to make a multi-cavity 2-piece wood mold, with fairly large openings into which to pour the mix.  The best glandes from such a mold could be ellipsoid, but flat-tailed; similar in shape to the bullets used in high-powered rifles.

Such a mold might yield smoother glande surfaces than hand-forming.

Large numbers of glandes could be made quickly and cheaply with such a wood mold.
