Maximum Distance
Aug 20th, 2004 at 4:29pm

I'm wondering: how far can someone throw using a sling?  I've gotten 100-150 yards, but I haven't been doing it very long.  What are some of your record throws?

Welcome to the forum

I have slung a golf ball about 250 yards and a 5.8 oz cement ball about 500 feet.

Yurek, from Poland, is going for a world record and has slung some lead glandes over a quater mile!!

The current record holder, Larry Bray slung a 2 oz stone 1434 feet!

Vicente,

If you go to the "Gallery" of our site you can see a picture of the sling and red painted stone used for the record distance. The picture is on page 3 of the Gallery

It is a picture with the pouch, a red stone, a lead molded projectile and a wooden rule.

Amazing!  My fingertips tremble in anticipation...
Does Yurek throw overhand, underhand, sidearm, or what?  How about wotsisname, Larry Bray?

My maximum distance... I'm afraid I couldn't say.  I have never measured it at all, because most of my range shooting is done out to sea, and it is very difficult to judge distance on the sea with any accuracy.  Try it.  I'd guess that I can do about 150m, probably more.  I nearly hit a boat once, but I guess it must have had quite a low draft.  Another problem with slinging from a beach is the problem of retrieving ammo.  But the beach provides.

Yurek and Larry both use the overhand release.

The over hand release: the one where you bring the sling down, up, over your head, down, and then whip, kindof like a figure eight?

I don't think Yurek uses that one but one more like my video in the "Articles Section" He does not throw his leg around as I do but he rotates it a time or two over his head similar to my "45 degree rotation Style"

The Guinness Book of Records lists David P. Engvall as the current record holder, with a sling throw of 1565 feet, with a 2 oz dart. Do you guys think this doesn't qualify, since a stone wasn't used for the ammo? I'm just curious.

Either way it is an awesome distance to sling something!

I Personally, for comparison sake, I don't think it is in the same catagory as slinging a stone and I am sure David knows that and was simply going for the max distance of any object with a sling.
