Do a search for mgreenfield posts. He has made at least two designs using 1" nylon webbing. One uses two pieces, the other uses 3 pieces.
Any flexible, but tough material could be used. Leather is, of course, the material of choice, but others can be found that work quite nicely. Denim covered with duct tape would work. Whatever you use, just make sure the connection is strong between the cord and pouch.
At the moment my personal favorite slings are made from nylon cords (parachute cord or similar) and 7 ounce, veg. tanned leather. This can be bought at your local Tandy Leather store or from Tandy on the web. You could also look for some old shoes at a cobbler or maybe a second hand store.
The stiffer leather does not hold the stone on release. This is an attribute which is important no matter what material you use.
