Sling Designing
Apr 2nd, 2004 at 7:31am

I have just been looking at the gallery and the articles, and I see that most of the sling design articles have complex designs, and require the use of a few complex tools, such as needle nose pliers, etc.  I use two pieces of wood tied together as a clamp for braiding, a knife for cutting, and a pencil to mark out where the pouch should be.  Maybe this limits the sling styles I can make, but I am fairly sure mesolithic man didn't have such tools, and slings were made then.  I guess, in spite of my age, I am a primitive traditionalist.  In fact, often I don't even use a knife or pencil in the design, and use bamboo to burn off the offcuts by friction, and plant juices to mark the pouch.  And maybe the reason I don't use complex tools is because I myself don't have any (although of course my parents do).  And maybe I should not complain about people using tools.  After all this website is for all types of slingers, whether they be using traditional, primitive slings or modern, tool incorporating slings.  And perhaps I am not looking hard enough in the articles section, but I can't find any articles that use really old style methods for old style slings.  Perhaps I should write an article.  But promise not to laugh.

Hmm, well, I read somewhere that the ancient Polynesians would use the intestines of their enemies to make their slings  Grin  bout as primitive as you can get. hehe

Down South we have this saying:
"I'm going to rip off your arm and beat you to death with it!"

english, you can make a sling out of a sock and a pair of shoe strings.

My own sling design doesn't require anything special, in fact I cut the leather with a pair of heavy shears, though a flint chip might have sufficed!  8)

When I braid a sling, I use scissors to cut the twine and a lighter to singe the ends.  Other than that, I don't use any tools.  For my rope slings, I just tie the knots and cut off the excess with scissors or a knife.  If your rope or cord is already close to the right length, no tools are required at all.

I don't know if I'd have the stomach for that.  That's just my gut reaction...

As for Johnny's southern saying -- you should never attack an un-armed man.

Grin Grin Oh, you guy´s  Cheesy

Well, back to the thread;
Since I yesterday got my new, nice peruvian sling, I´m bound to agree with Barak and the other who prefer braided slings. There is a very "real" feeling in such a good braided sling!

You got yours?!  I'm jealous!!  I'm still waiting.  No worries, Whipartist, I know you've got lots to mail out and probably a life of your own to live when not catering to whiny slingers like me Wink.  I'm just really bad at delayed gratification. Smiley
