Title: Hello from the United States
Post by Waxwing_Sling on Jun 24th, 2020 at 11:30am
Good morning,

(It's morning where I am.)

I'm not technically new to the forum, as I had set up an account about five years ago, but never posted much with it, and can no longer seem to access it, so I decided to set up a new account.

I started with my interest in slinging five years ago, primarily building and using para-cord slings (from tutorials on this website). My use of slings in the past few years has been rather inconsistent, but I'm now getting back into it once again. Now I'm making my slings with braided nylon line and leather pouches. I'm still working out my ideal sling build and throwing technique, but at the moment I think the Byzantine style of throw is my favorite.

I'm also interested in the historical use of the sling. I've read enough over the years to have a general idea of the eras and applications of when the sling was extensively used, but I am always interest in learning more. Currently I'm reading some of Xenophon's writing and other sources related to the Achaemenid Empire.

I decided on the screen name because I enjoy observing birds, and lately there have been a lot of cedar waxwings passing through my yard. Just another of my many interests.

Welcome! Again! I've been on this forum for a long time too. I go through posting sprees (that don't last long) Currently, I am in a flurry of posting (certainly COVID restrictions induced), so I know all about lurking without saying much.

I'm sure the COVID situation is a contributing factor to my attention turning back to slinging. That and my interests tend to be cyclical. Old interests come back around as new interests again. The COVID era marks the second time I've seriously taking up slinging, as well as whittling and yoga (it's good for the back, especially when your profession requires you to drive a desk for 40 hours/ week).

Welcome! It seems like these days are a great day to be a bird watcher what with the digital binoculars that take pics and video. If I had more time that is one hobby I would like to get into. Do you hae a favorite bird? A most rare bird youve seen?

should have told me - I'd have reset your original account.

You've changed your email address or it would have flagged it up when I went to set this one up.

Anyway welcome back :thumb:

I'm just doing a simple 3-strand flat braid (but with 6 strands, doubled up into 3) with #18 nylon line. It's all I know how to do at the moment. I intend to learn more techniques.

At the moment, I rather enjoy watching cedar waxwings as my favorite (hence the screen name). But my favorite bird is always fluid...it tends to vary between other birds I find in the yard, depending upon the season. I can't recall if I've seen any bird that's truly rare. To me, I think the most noteworthy birds I've observed are those that aren't necessarily rare, but that are more often heard than seen, such as the belted kingfisher or the barred owl. I've also observed a number of pileated woodpeckers in my neighborhood in the last year, which is a sudden change from past years (you might hear them, but a siting was rare). Lately, I've been trying to sneak a peak at an American Bittern I often hear in a certain wetlands I walk around often. If I can actually spot it, I think that will be the holy grail of my bird observations. They are elusive.

Yes, I am using a different e-mail as my primary. No worries, a new screen name is fine with me. I didn't do anything horrible and get banned under the old screen name.  ;D

I must admit, I had to look the greenjay up, as it is not in my area either. Very interesting bird.

I failed to mention before, I am in Central Minnesota, United States. Where the prairie and woods meet, with many, many lakes. It's a great place for observing nature.

I've never been to Minnesota, but I'd like to visit some day it sounds like a beautiful place.

P.s. Do you keep a life list?

Nope. I know that tends to be the mark of a true birder, but I just never got around to it.
