Title: I made a sling...
Post by Caldou on Feb 14th, 2020 at 4:08pm
Incredible, isn'it ?

Well, the point is that sling is the first one I made to sell... And I haven't the slightest idea on pricing a sling.
So I asked for 15€ and got 20.

So, how much this sling should have been sold for ? *

Twisted cords with woven pouch, linen with red wool and yellow hemp, perfect for a roman soldier...

Thanks :)

* Currently having a brain fart... How do you even phrase this sentence in correct english ?? :-? ::)

how llong did it take you to make ?

20 euro seems about right to me. But then I don't braid ;-)

If you search you can find slings, with what seems similar effort to make, having a vast difference in price.

the most extreme examples I could find for woven designs are
3.73 euro https://shop.amdocraft.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=57_35&product_id=108
75 dollars http://www.seekyee.com/Slings/products.htm
and I'm pretty sure I've seen somewhere a tut sling being sold for 120 dollars but couldn't find it.

I'd bet it took you more than 3h to make the sling so you are selling relatively cheap but then again there is probably not high demand.

some feedback I could give you is to take photos that display the sling better if you are selling online.

I took something like 7h to finish this one, but I forgot to take a picture before sending it.
I know that the hourly rate is not a good one but I won't make it a regular revenue for me, I mainly don't want to make the market value of sling drop too much for the professionnal sling makers of this forum ^^

C_A : This one isn't braided ;) But yes, the weaving and tightening took some time... and swearing  :-X

My recommendation: ask for as much as you consider yourself a fair price and worth your time. And you should also enjoy the process of making the sling. Your trading partner seemed more than happy with it as he/she even raised the price  ;).

If you would go at it from a business perspective: French minimal wage of about 10 Euro/hour*4 hours (3 hours work + shopping for material + going to the post office + communication). Material cost 5 Euro. Add a margin of 30% if you like to account for your personal gain, costs for storage, homepage costs, tools etc. and we are already well above 50 Euro.

The prices I ask depend quite a bit on what I sell. If it is something I made for me, which I don't want to keep, then its either a gift or you buy me a beer or two (i.e. 10-20 Euro range).

Sometimes I work on comission. Then you will get something custom fitted for you. But you certainly won't like the price tag as I have absolutely no intention nor motivation to make quick crappy slings in bulk which I can sell at a price people would consider buying  :D.
I also think that quality or, when considering a reproduction, the attention to detail, should influence the price.

For a good quality sling made by a skilled person 70-80 Euro is a decent price I would consider paying.
