Title: Recruiting all Australian slingers!!!
Post by Mersa on Jan 16th, 2020 at 6:31pm
I'm thinking that it's time to count and essemble all Australian slingers.
I would like to attempt to put together a Australia team and search for sponsorship to make it to an international competition in the next years .
CA perhaps you can let me know how many are actually registered on the forum?
And also any ideas on company's that may be interested in sponsoring.

I'd be interested!

But I probably won't be able to go for a while. I'll have to get a passport. Have yet to have a need for one of those.

I'm pretty much a caveman. Never even left a state, let alone the country. :P

Well jack maybe a passport and a trip overseas is what you need

And slinging in a place like Guam or the Balearic Islands... why yes, I certainly think an overseas trip is in order! ;)

Assuming of course the trip is sponsored. If not, I'll see if I can get a job. If I can get one, Definetly look forward to me going!

Prices seem to be cheaper than getting to Mallorca.
This was only a quick Google search but appears that way. I already have support from one company however the amount of sponsorship is undisclosed. I'd appreciate anything to be honest.
Save your pennies and start practicing. Would be nice to get a team together.
Again bump to CA if you could send a list of Australian forum members.

Yeah, I assumed it might be cheaper just because its much closer to here. In either case, There's no way I could go to the Balearic islands this year anyway.

But as you have said, practice is definitely in order! ;)

Oh, good job finding a Sponsor! I never would have assumed we'd ever get that far. "Slinging? what the hell is that... get the hell out of my Office!"

Hmm, aussie would have know - as he sent slings to just about every forum member at one time or another.
Unfortunately I don't have an option to sort members buy country.

Off the top of my head I'd say we probably have half a dozen 'current' members in australia.

Maybe a search thought the new members intro threads would turn them up.

So this sponsorship - how did you get it ?
I really need to try.

so quick search of the intro thread:
metalode
CrazyBrave333?
Al Paca
MickB
sdrum
Meshurock
Mick
Camo-Sling
BeachSlinger
Gnimbly
Gadge

That's going back to 2010.
There may be more.

Some of those posts are up to 10 years old. So emails my not be current or even checked any more.

But it's somewhere to start, and most of them - if you can contact them - will probably know one or 2 other slingers.

Times like this, I really miss ludek. He had all the addresses :-(

probably best to go with emails rather than pm's.
Most of those haven't been around for a while.

If their member details doesn't give you an email option let me know and I'll dig it out of there details for you :-)

Ha ha , might not be received the way we intended ha ha
I’ll keep trying to recruit but it appears we’re the most active Australian slingers on the forum. Lucky we’re somewhat close (250-300km apart) at least we will be able to meet .
Save those pennies jack I’m serious about getting to a comp soon and Guam seems the most likely.

If I don't get that money for next year, I will be sure to commit Seppuku!

I would be greatly ashamed in myself if I miss a nice vacation in Guam. Especially a slinging vacation.

So I'll be sure to sacrifice several goats in the hope that my CV will land me a job.

Well I think a meeting is in order.
You ever come down south?
I know a few spots down here with great stones everywhere and minimal people. In Perth it’s a little more hard to come by spots like that

I've been going down to Ballingup every year for the past couple years for the Medieval fair there. My mother's friend literally lives within 200 metres of the tavern. You can see the tents off into the distance if it isn't covered by mists. It was really damn awesome.

A shame we didn't get to meet up at the medieval fair last year :'(

Saturday 22 and Sunday 23rd of August. It's over in Ballingup, a really damn beautiful and scenic place to have a medieval fair.

Here is the site for more information:https://www.balingupmedievalcarnivale.com.au/

Perhaps we should organise a sling stall, could be a good place to all get together and promote slinging.

I could probably make some historically accurate lead glandes. The British museum just so happens to a) have hundreds of glandes in their site... but b) are also awesome enough to provide the most important thing necessary... dimensions and mass as well as pretty pictures. Can you believe that?

Perhaps selling slings with lethal projectiles is not the best idea. I was thinking more recreational slings. Lots of simple cord and leather designs and a few braided ones. I can seriously look into it. I will be heading out that way soon and they meet every Sunday to organise the festivities.

Was thinking a small store ?
A display of slinging?
And maybe a small LARP appearance if possible?

Title: Re: Recruiting all Australian slingers!!!

I was thinking more as display pieces than for sale... It’s a medieval faire, gotta show off the deadlies or the knights will make fun of us! What with their fancy armour and tapestries and spoon making and stuff. Plus, it will probably create more interest than if it was just a bunch of ‘ropes with a leather thing on it’.

Actually, Could make a small timeline display showing off multiple projectiles and make some medieval slingstones as well to compare. Seems that simple clay balls have a lot of provenance, I believe Jaegoor has a few authentic medieval slingstones.

Doing a Slinging display would be awesome, though I have no idea how to organise that type of stuff. If by LARP you mean roleplay as a slinger/Shepherd, yeah I can do that. I’m hand sewing my ‘costume’ right now actually.

I can also make some woolen slings. Not as hardy as leather or paracord, but oh boy with the right combo of colours you can end up with pretty sling cords. And instead of dealing with weaving the pouch you can do a split braid than sew on a leather pouch. Don’t expect anything like an Andean or Tibetan sling though! I’m not masochistic. Do you reckon five or ten would suffice for a small stall?

Not sure how I can deliver that stuff to you though. Never done this stuff before.

I haven't even been able to practice!  :'(

Not for not wanting to practice But for the lack of slingtones that aren't... ahem, complete crap.

So. I got my hands on some cement. Was going to get Concrete but nope, didn't have it down at my local Bunnings. Just had Cement.

There is also river stones sold at bunnings. seems a bit silly buying a bag of rocks but its not a bad option if your looking.

no stress on the practice, understandable give the world at the moment.
