Title: New Years Resolutions
Post by Rat Man on Dec 30th, 2019 at 9:53pm
I have two.  The first is probably the most common one... lose some weight.  I'm tall and big and can carry some weight but I'm at 260 now.  That's too much even for my frame.  The diet starts January 1st.  My last two attempts at deiting failed miserably.  This time I'm setting a more realistic goal... 20 lbs.  If I lose more great, but this time I'm keeping my expectations lower.
The second is to clean my messy room.  Not just regular clean it but G.I. it.  Pull everything out into the living room and put just half back in, donating the rest to charity.  Having my room clean and organized would give a nice boost to my mental health.
That's it.  I think these goals are reasonable and attainable.  Do you have any?

go keto, lose weight and try and get off the diabetes medication.
Get the laser business up and running.
Not so much resolutions, more things I absolutely have to do !

Next year has to be better than this year.

Two so far... one is to learn Toki Pona. Supposed to be easy enough to do in one weekend. The other is to figure out a way to get slings to the masses without people even realizing that that’s what just happened ;D

Want to do more work on my scroll saw. At least a project a month on it. Oh and use my new hook knife to make at least 2 wooden spoons once there's green wood around.

Want to work up loads on my .357 now that I have molds and a reloading press. I need to experiment and enjoy it. Including a hunting load in time for November.

Have a garden. I actually want to make progress on that.

And I want to do more strength training at least 2x a week. Surprisingly my cardio is pretty good but I need more strength progress. Early 30s are apparently the opposite of early 20s.

I'm not a big one for New Years resolutions.  Too many in the past that I didn't see through to the end.  But I do have a couple project related things that I want to do this year.

The first is get my lathe set up.  This past summer some friends of mine very generously got me a lathe for my birthday.  I've been interested in wood turning for a while, just never put the cash toward getting one.  The problem is I haven't gotten my basement rearranged yet to where I can set it up.  But that's definitely on the agenda before the end of winter.  I've only taken one short class on wood turning, so my experience is extremely limited.  But I'm looking forward to it.

The second thing is I want to make another bow.  I haven't made a bow in years and it was something I really enjoyed.  The problem here is also with my basement full of stuff.  I'm in the habit of using my work bench for storage, and I need to stop doing that.  I think if I can get it cleared off and start on a bow, that will be a good incentive to not starting piling stuff up on it.

You'll have to keep us updated on the lathework there Joe. I inherited a lathe along with my scrollsaw but the extra steps have kept me from getting it up and running. It's a bit more complicated than scrollsaw work  ;D

Ha! Every time someone talks about a lathe, I think of this movie scene:

What a fantastic film. I really need to sit down and watch the whole film again sometime. It's funny because I was just watching a YouTube video that referenced Galaxy Quest earlier today and how it used cliches perfectly like with the timer counting down to 1 second before stopping because that's the cliche. A really clever film.

Will do.  The first project I have tentatively planned is tap handles for my keezer.  I have three taps and think that will be a simple enough thing to start with.

And +1 on the fantastic-ness of Galaxy Quest :)

Continue on the path I am currently on but improve on the way.

figured I'd keep it simple and doable.

So currently going with: Accomplish at least one thing each day (getting out of bed does not count)

Working so far.
Today I've redesigned the hinged glande moulds to use metal butt hinges. Which should fix the hinge issue and eliminate any weak points.

Just started the first test print :-)
Assuming I've sorted all the dumb design issues I had yesterday - this one will be going to cairo for destruction testing :-)
(it's a persons name NOT the city lol)

Wood Lathes.
Did a fair bit of wood turning some years back. These days the lather is mainly used as a disc sander with a homemade sanding plate.

It's a very satisfying process, starting with a rough lump of wood and finishing with a finished thing.
But it is something of an adrenaline sport.

After all, you are taking an uneven piece of wood spinning it up somewhere betweeen 500-2000 rpm and then poking it with a sharp piece of metal !
The wood doesn't always stay attached to the chuck, so your refelxes are sharpened and yu are constantly waiting for something to go wrong :-)
You will see youtube videos of old guys who've been turning 50 years or so. They look relaxed.
THAT WILL NOT BE YOU ! lol

I would recommend a gum shield. I often used to catch myself with gritted teeth, particularly when initially rounding out an irregelular chunk of wood  :-)

Now if you want a more relaxing version of wood turning. Make your self a bodging/pole lathe and only use green wood.
It's slow turning with a foot powered lathe.

also today testing different colours of leather to see which looks best when engraved - partly for the sith sling and partly because I've been meaning to do it since I got the k40 :-)
