I did this for knife protection, but it can also work against sling stones :)    (to some extent)
Because, the impact is distributed over a wide area.

PS: You always have to protect yourself against the knife with an official Stab Vest. This was just a test.

Aus der antike und Mittelalter, gibt es Berichte.
Sie erzählen, daß die Rüstung eines Soldaten oft völlig unbeschädigt blieb. Der Soldat aber war an inneren Verletzungen gestorben.
Ich erfuhr das auch hier von Polizisten. Ich kenne zwei Fälle aus Deutschland. Polizisten wurden bei einer Demonstration mit Slings beschossen. Sie erhielten Treffer an Bein und Schulter prodektoren. Diese blieben unbeschädigt. Die Knochen darunter brachen.
Aber es ist dennoch interessant und eine gute Arbeit.
Ich würde gerne darauf schießen. 😁

Ja. Es gibt einige verletzte Beamte. Ein Polizistin erhielt einen Treffer am Visier ihres Helmes. Das Visier brach. Die junge Frau erblindete auf einem Auge.
Es gibt auch einen Bericht aus Kiel.
Zu Silvester haben unbekannte auf eine Feuerwehr geschossen. Der Stein zerstörte die Scheibe und verletzte denn Feuerwehrmann schwer am Kopf.
Dennoch gilt die Schleuder nur als Spielzeug. Nicht als Waffe. Zum Glück.
Aber solche idioten zerstören vielleicht die Grundlage für einen Sport.
Man hat bisher noch keine Täter gefasst.
Aber es sind wohl nicht nur deutsche.

Well, back to Timpa and his genius in weaponizing practically anything.  And everything.

So, have you tried it out against a sling?  I don't think it could take a hit from a huge rock but probably could stop a thrown beer or coke bottle?  Or a ball bearing?

The resulting pit, absorbs energy. But - as Jaegoor and Bill said - the shock can be too large.

This is purely conjecture and not based on any actual statistics or historical evidence, but I wouldn't be surprised if slings have been used in the majority of riots and popular uprisings in history to some extent. Honestly, if I was involved in revolution, one the first things I'd pick up is a sling. As Jaegoor was saying, even modern armour struggles against getting hit with a fast moving rock. My martial arts instructor (Choi Kwang Do) is a policeman and was on duty in Birmingham during the riots that happened across England a few years ago. He was in full riot gear and got hit in the head with a brick. He was actually uninjured but his helmet was badly damaged and the psychological impact was obvious. This is a guy with a handshake that could break your hand and could shout (kihap = "spirit yell") so loud it would leave your ears ringing and his voice was breaking as he recalled what happened and that was with a hand-thrown brick. Even two or three slingers mixed in with general rioters would be devastating.

I can't see how the sling would be effective in riots.
If one man does it, then he stands out and will become the target of riot police. If a lot do it then riot police will bring the big guns, water cannon, plastic bullets etc..

Das ist der Bericht mit der Feuerwehr. 2012 in kiel.
Das andere sind Berichte der Polizei. Diese kann ich Dir leider nicht zugänglich machen. Es sind Einsatzberichte zu denn Castor Transporten. Ich durfte auf Fotos schauen um slings zu finden. Ich fand mehrere. Bei Festnahmen fand die Polizei slings. Diese waren getarnt. Also verdeckt getragen. Eine war als Schnürsenkel an einem Stiefel. Eine andere sling war ein Riemen an einem Rucksack. Eine andere wurde als Gürtel getragen. Es ist sehr schwer so etwas zu finden. Oft stehen die schützen verdeckt hinter anderen.

I wonder how polycarbonate lexan plating would protect against sling stones?

A few mm thick thermoformed lexan breastplate would definitely be arrow and knife-proof.

I think it would work well.  Just a couple things.  It would work best if it had a curve, which would allow it to better deflect energy rather than only absorbing it.  And because a sling projectile is essentially working as a blunt force weapon, you would also want to have padding of some kind under the breastplate.  But with that I think it would be quite effective.

Very impressive Timpa! I really like the look of the weave too. I’m also impressed that you found an official test method to use for comparison against other cut protection devices.
