Title: The Hinged glande moulds are ready to go, so I was thinking....
Post by Curious Aardvark on Apr 22nd, 2019 at 4:01pm
throwing spheres and glandes is all well and good.
So I was lying in the hottub sunday thinking how I could metal (like jazzing it up, but with better music) things up a bit.

I realised real warriors sling SKULLS !

Seemed simple enough (ah, how many times those words have led to dispair and madness)
Could I get an imported skull model to do anything but crash the system - could I Bollocks !
So that was most of easter sunday up the spout !

So I've spent today modelling my own skull :-) (not MY skull, just a skull, clear ? good)

Once My phone holder for camera tripod has finishd I'll print the mould.

I don't claim any artistic talent, but i reckon this turned out quite well.
The tricky part was keeping it more or less spherical, but still clearly a skull. IT also had to work as a 2 part mould, which most of the available skull models just wouldn't have done anyway.
Also it needed to actually be something you could sling accurately, so largely spherical.
Somehow reducing the facets made it look a LOT more skull like :-)

So here's Skully McSkull face:

That looks awesome! Adds in a nice fear factor I'm sure the ancient slingers would appreciate. I wonder if they ever did stuff like this.

That does look sweet

Yep they'll be for sale :-)
Death whistles ?
Would be simple enough to make a hole in the clay.

I'm also planning on spray painting them gold or silver.
Think I have both.

As steve pointed out, there are going to be some seriously confused archaeologists in 500 years or so :-)

"Are you absolutely sure, this layer's from the 21st century ? That was the primitive age of firearms wasn't it ? So why are we finding so many sling bullets - and what on earth are the little skulls about  ???"

Initially going for a 40mm mould size.

Oh yeah, the skull also had to be parametrically resizeable.
There's a lot more to this stuff than you lot realise :-)

Are the moulds water tight?  More specifically, do you think it would work as an ice mould?
I had a bunch of ice balls made up that I was slinging this past weekend.  But imagine what this would have looked like if they were all little skulls :D

no, 3d printed parts are almost never entirely watertight - but you could make a silicon mould from the dried clay skulls easily enough :-)

just put a bunch in a tray, pour on the silicon and when it's set, peel off and turn upside down and you've got a silicon ice skull mould.

Watched someone do the same thing with chocolate on a random youtube video yesterday :-)

made a play doh skull last night - well about 02:30 this morning (haven't even fitted the hinge properly yet).
The teeth need a little work, but comes out of the mould easily enough :-)
And the measured dimensions were spot on, so should fly really well.

I'll do some clay ones today and see about getting some matt white spray paint.
With the mixed up colours of the play doh you can't really tell how much detail there is.

The left eye (as you look, is just as deep as the right - but with the weird mix of colours you can't really tell. Mind you the way the playdoh has dried and split overnight, really works. Might think about adding some surface cracks in the future.

The big glande is from christians mould - one thing I will say, if you want a large mould, use softer clay.
It's not perfectly round, because i simply couldn't squeeze it shut any more.
And that's a LOT of pressure !

My air dried is pretty stiff and while the smaller glandes, spheres and skulls are fine.
The larger sizes are a real struggle.
Pretty much proven the moulds are super strong, but you'll still need a softer material.

Going to dry the clay overnight on my workshop heater.
I'll wipe the talc off once they're hard and then spray with some white matt paint i got :-)
I have stamped a curious aardvark on them all, round the back - curious to see how it fares once painted.

Not sure how skull like he is, but definitely looks like something you wouldn't want to meet down a dark alley !

They look so cool. I'm wondering if they'll make any whistling noise. Skull ammo is scary but skull ammo that screams would be perfect for Halloween :D

That's got to be the coolest ammo ever.

they weigh around 65gms at the moment, so should be somewhere around 60 when dried.
A 40 mm sphere usually ends up around 65.
So these aren't far off.

And yeah, pretty cool :-)

well the paint really helps.
Of course once you've put them ina  cardboard box and left them in the sun to dry and gone to do a job, it's not ideal when it suddenly pisses down with rain !

They seem to have survived :-)

The 'silver' ones are a one off - there wasn't enough gas left in the can to spray the paint, so it kind of dribbled out and I dribbled it over the skulls :-)

They definitely look a lot more skull-like with paint :thumb:

Was going to redesign - but once you add a quick and dodgy paint job - they really look the part.

I figure I'll be able to get at least 100 in the suitcase next year (usually have about 6kg left and I won't bother with the bugspray or kettle next year - so thats another couple kg). I can see losing more to people's pockets than to the target

wonder how security will interprate them in the case scan :noidea:

Carry on luggage would be funnier.

not for me.
Ask uwe about carrying clay glandes.
He ended up having to put his in the hold for a cost of 3 euros per glande !

I have one of the most expensive clay glandes in europe upstairs lol

The guys from guam manage to carry just about anything through security checks. But with Romans charm and Guelu's luck - they're in a class of their own.

I'm not even going to attempt it. :-)

Maybe next year. Lol. But that's insane they made him pay that much.

he had 20 glandes, got charged the full hold luggage amount.

First year they cam roman and guelu carried about 20kg of rocks in their hand luggage though about 6 airports :-)

Well, I wouldn't want to be the one to stop several large Polynesian/Micronesian dudes at an Airport for carrying twenty kilograms worth of stones...  ;D

You should fly with them and get a discount on luggage!

so i thought I'd see how many different face type things I can put on sling missiles :-)

Trying to make a frowny face as well - but man that upside down smile is a lot harder to model than you'd think !
