I bought a dozen foam (American) footballs. As ammo goes they’re a lot of fun! They hold a great spiral coming out of the sling. Not the cheapest ammunition, but it might be a good alternative to sockballs. They weigh 14g, and you can even get a good curve on it thanks to the Magnus Effect.

Cool idea! With the fairly small weigh to size ratio, I'd think they wouldn't fly very far. But the shape could help counter that. What kind of range do you get with them?

My back yard only gives me about 30 or 40 feet. Based on the one that went over the fence I’d say you could probably get at least double or triple that, but I haven’t tried yet.

Look like a good choice for sling wars, safety glasses on and let's go!!

Years ago I tried the small nerf footballs that had tails, since I was still new to the sling, i didn't have good luck. But now they are packed away from my move. So if i ever come across em again, i will try again. I thought they would be good for the sling dodgeball game, 'fundaball'
These look promising though. |

I have these small American football shaped bouncy balls that are the perfect size and weight for slinging but are just too bouncy and hard. They could take someone's eye out I'm sure and they're super unpredictable just dropping them let alone coming out of a sling. I've kpt them around just incase I ever want to make a mould using them.

Hmmm, you could use polyurethane expanding building foam and inject into a mould or just carve into shape.
pretty cheap and if you confine it initially it stays fairly dense. |

Came across this the other day, and I just had to try it out.
Got some double-dot squash balls and filled them with .177 steel bbs, and they came out at exactly 100g. I recon a stone of the same size would weigh about the same. I think "Joe" balls could be a serious competitor to Rusty Balls as stone-equivalent practice ammo. |

A squash ball filled with lead or iron shot, is totally lethal and so similar to a 'sap' that it'd probably be illegal most places.
Try filling one with sand. I mean still lethal, but possibly not quite as illegal as the lead shot version. I have tried squash balls filled with sand, doesn't seem to matter what you seal the initial slit with, it will split. I also seem to recall that I was knocking the mortar out of the wall with them. Some serious impact. Probably a thread around about it somewhere. Likewise rusty balls are anything but safe. Their only real redeeming factor is that they dont ricochet. |

Yes, like rusty balls they are certainly not for playing sling tag with... The point of these is to be a stone substitute, that can be used to throw at hard surfaces without causing damage. Because of their weight and density, they facilitate accurate slinging. What is a 'sap'? all I can find under that name is the weighted beavertail slapping thing. As a ball on it's own I don't see how it could be considered anything different (under the law) to something like a medicine ball. They are both rubber balls filled with sand or metal shot. (albeit one is substantially bigger than the other) Oh and these balls don't ricochet either like rusty balls, and they are not deformed when you go to pick them up. |

still looking around for the perfect practice ammo.
I like rusties but they are not durable enough for me my requirements are- - fabrication complete, no need for homemade, so I can just buy a bulk - ~100 g in weight - biconical in shape, no balls - durable - soft on impact, rubber? - not overly large, must have some density - not $20 a piece |

I've made some improvements and I think I've solved the splitting issue. First line of defense though is choosing the right adhesive, which needs to be strong and flexible. I think that's what Joe found with neoprene adhesive. |

Maybe a rubber biconical with a small steel core for the weight
It would likely have to be homemade, casting the rubber around a steel core in a mold |
Title: Re: Practice ammo Post by Morphy on Aug 2nd, 2021 at 12:00pm
J if you could find mini footballs made from the same dense foam rubber that the soft baseballs are made from that would pretty much be what you are looking for.
Alternatively if you could buy the material you could maybe pour into a mold (yes I know that would mean you would have to make them ;)) but still it would work. And once made they would last quite awhile. |
Title: Re: Practice ammo Post by Kick on Aug 3rd, 2021 at 1:44pm
The one I have would be perfect if it just wasn't so bouncy. I've never slung it because I know for a fact I would lose it. It would be perfect for a mould though. It's on the list.

Kick, I wonder if after making a mold from those if pure silicone would work? If not that there most be something thats easily attainable that would have the right properties.

What should it be good for? For a battle they are too small. Even if they are very light. They fit into an eye. For a training, I have not found anything better than Rusty s. But there are already finished rusty balls to buy. I saw her at Decathlon. Unfortunately, these balls NiGGT have been in lighter weights. You should find on the Internet.

My criteria for an ideal practice projectile:
- overall projectile density equivalent to stone - stiff enough to not deform on release - decent bounce (so you only need one ball when throwing at a wall) - round shape (because they bounce straight back) - surface should not smooth and not overly grippy - unbreakable I think all of these could be achieved with a projectile that has steel ball as a core, a hard rubber layer surrounding the core, and a softer rubber layer that goes to the outside. In essence I think a heavier golf-ball with less bounce would achieve the same thing. |

Speaking of golf balls...
I properly tried them for the first time today, and they really are a fantastic practice ammo for 70y wall practice. They behave a bit like glandes by practically 'floating' to the target, they weigh the same as glans (45g), and you only need one of them. With a 24" balearic it bounces all the way to my feet. Golf balls are abundant and cheap, designed to fly long distances, highly visible, and practically indestructible. Only real downside is that they're not good for beginners or close range. (unless you like limbo-dodging and/or bruises) Roses are red, violets are blue, love golf balls! For they fly true. |
Title: Re: Practice ammo Post by Curious Aardvark on Aug 4th, 2021 at 10:23am
lol dunno about golf balls flying true.
I can put a 90 degree angle on a golfball throw. Get enough spin on the buggers and they will curve better than a boomerang ! And you're right about not being close up ammo. Seriously bouncy ! But cheap and easy to get. I've got bags of them scattereed about. I do have a design for a no-spin pouch that i keep meaning to try at golfball size. But impressed that you can get them to fly straight ! |

I want to try some cricket balls(as they are called here) made for distance throwing practice with hand, they are very cheap and easily available here and right sort of size and weight for slinging(I found them ranging from 100g to 250g and being 1-2 bucks each)
I think those will fly just like clay balls and would be great for target practice and even some distance slinging. I don't know why I didn't think about this earlier. We used them a lot in school during p.e. classes when throwing for distance. If we will do it this year again I will bring my sling with me and show that I can throw the furthest with a bit of braided string ;D :D |

That looks awesome Jaegoor!
Ive been looking at all different chew toys for dogs - they are made durable and usually have decent weight... including mini tennis balls with solid core... |
