The guy's head isn't exploding, as it would with a ~100-200 gram projectile from about 5 metres away. :P

Goliath has no spear
Distance too short
David, an experienced slinger, either slings with his right leg forward or steps into the release, thus losing torque

This image can be used as the slinger's final test.  ;D

(In addition: Goljat had six fingers and toes.)

It's a common misconception. When I was a little boy, I also thought so.

yes it seems it is.

once I gave a passer by a sling to try , I demonstrated the motion , he had no questions.
he loaded a stone and slung
but didn't release !
why you didn't release I asked surprised
I didn't know it was needed he replied .
fortunately he stopped the stone before hitting him, later he proved to be a good at it.

I agree.  Definitely a misconception.  I once had some people at my place to brew a beer.  Afterward we were outside and I showed everyone one of my slings.  I gave a quick explanation of how to start the swing, and to try to feel the weight and direction of the projectile.  Anyway the first guy gave it a try with an underhand technique.  When he went to throw, he just opened up his swing a little and tried to force the projectile out by going faster.  The sling just came up over his head and the projectile hit him right in the back.  Thankfully we were only using some small apples that grow in the yard, so he wasn't hurt at all.  It was actually quite hilarious.  But I was surprised to find out he didn't know he was supposed to let go of one side.

My girlfriend's father has watched me sling at the Summer cottage for countless hours over years at this point and one day he finally asked to have a go. Swung it round and didn't let go! Somehow he had never actually understood exactly what I was doing despite YEARS watching me :D

One more inaccuracy: they’re fighting in the snow... their feet would be really cold!
Oh, and that rock is striking one of the thickest parts of the skull on the forehead there... at an angle that would bounce off in a glancing blow.

is it possible David was using a cross draw .flips empty sling into hand drops rock in pouch slides fingers down till they feel the knot .and away he goes . or more likely the artist wanted to show he was carrying a bag ,presumably of rocks but wanted to draw David facing to the right. the bag would have to be on the right to be seen .
This by the way is my first post .so hi to all.
