Title: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Tomas on Sep 28th, 2018 at 8:18pm
Halloween is coming and with it, PUMPKINS!!!
Let’s all share in this friendly competition.
Stand around 15-20 meters from your pumpkin and get some footage of you slinging at it.
I don’t think I’ll hit mine too much and that distance is close enough to give
Most of us a solid chance of scoring some points.
I was aiming at a Cup again today and got within a foot’s distance from it a few times. Pumpkin should be hittable.
Let’s post our footage and maybe even greate a montage!

I'm in. I also wanna make a jack o'lantern comparison.
See how ugly we can make a pumpkin head with stones for cutting tools .

I guess we're trying to do this before Halloween ??

I think I'll be getting in on this. I can give all the pumpkin bits to our cockroaches so no waste :D

Well with this amount of contestants at least I get a spot on the podium!

I'm going to try this. No promises and of course it might actually have to stop raining for a day to do it. But it sounds great.

It's finally getting cold over here but hopefully it'll be warm enough to drag myself out next week and go smash a pumpkin *Insert Billy Corgan joke here*

what did the pumpkins ever do to you ?

I'll get petv (people for the ethical treatment of vegetables) on to you !

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Tomas on Sep 29th, 2018 at 6:42pm
CA- since pumpkins have seeds they must be fruit so the petv has no jurisdiction on the matter. I hope to see your own video footage of pumpkin carnage!!!

Btw- I don’t want there to be a prize. This is just us having fun

PETF - are right bastards compared to the PETV !
You REALLY don't want to mess with the PETF !

And both of those group pale in comparison to Gourds Anonymous. I may have to pull a Sarosh and blur my face if I make a video.

That’s exactly what you would expect someone to say if they expect to lose ;)

Got my pumpkin! It's not exactly a... large pumpkin but size isn't everything. This is supposed to be a challenge anyway and those huge pumpkins would be far too easy! :D

I'm wondering actually how hard it's going to be to smash it. It's pretty dense and heavy so I'm expecting lots of glancing shots. Hopefully I'll crack through it. I might not be able to film the whole session (I am going to miss A LOT) but I'll be sure to count all my shots so I can say how long it takes me to get a good hit.

why not have a prize ?

I'll put up a 60x30 glande mould, including postage (could take a while I've just discovered you can still send stuff overland :-)

Most spectacular pumpkin smash wins.
Not most hits or furthest distance - but biggest hit.
I want to see blood and brains exploding out the back of the skull !
That is: seeds and pul and rind, from the back of the pumpkin :-)

My advice: Use big rocks :thumb:

Rules:
Video must show you and the pumpkin or be videoed from where you stand.
Standing 2 feet from the pumpkin won't count. At least 10 metres from the pumpkin is required.
If you can have a second camera behind the pumpkin - that would work in your favour :-)

Jaegoor is not eligible for the prize. I mean, come on he's just too good at this kind of thing ;-)

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by kicktheotter on Oct 1st, 2018 at 2:28pm
Ooooo interesting. Let's see what I can do with this small pumpkin. Hopefully I an get something spectacular :D I might be able to use my girlfriend's camera so will be able to film for longer and I can use a tripod so I won't need her standing around in a field getting cold. I'm just praying now it won't rain tomorrow.

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Mersa on Oct 1st, 2018 at 4:53pm
I may need to buy a pumpkin this weekend , I'm going to put it out there that 10m is a good distance with one camera. We should be able to see the hits . I'm still hoping to punch holes in it not smash it open , I was even going to potentially buy lead to try reduce my surface area so I can try make a face .
I'm pretty excited for this .

Thanks ca that's very generous , will make me more nervous now there's something at stake !!

As for jaegoor I wouldn't exclude him , just ask that he makes a challenge suited to his skill , perhaps moving ??

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Curious Aardvark on Oct 2nd, 2018 at 6:38am
a swinging pumpkin ?
lol
Jaegoors after a really big mould anyway.

But yep 10 metres is a good distance for a pumpkin.

Think that's about how far I was when i killed one in wyoming - damn that was over 10 years ago !

So if we keep the comp open till after halloween - then you can use the carved pumpkins, which is less of a waste :-)

Should still look pretty good as most people don't do a very good hollowing job :-)

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by kicktheotter on Oct 4th, 2018 at 9:45am
Well I tried my best.

4 hits: first one wasn't caught on the camera, one was a glancing blow, third took the top off and the 4th was a direct hit but wasn't caught on camera and really just mashed up the skin.

Misses... A lot. Forgot to count but more than a hundred throws most probably :D To be fair I'm out of practice (I'm always out of practice) and it is a pretty small pumpkin.

In fact it's a red kuri pumpkin/squash which I just found a picture online of cut in half. Yeah I don't think I'm going to be able to smash one. They are super dense. If I can find a "normal" pumpkin that's not too huge and is pretty cheap I might have another go.

https://www.google.fi/search?q=red+kuri+pumpkin&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjjqbr89OzdAhWnposKHeo1DZwQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=657#imgrc=KSA4Bq9V1lVpJM:

I might upload some of my attempts on a separate thread just so I can get some feedback on my technique but I can put up the hits here.

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by kicktheotter on Oct 4th, 2018 at 10:16am
2nd and 3rd hits.

The 2nd hit was a glancing blow, the 3rd took the top off the pumpkin.

Files were too big for the forum so I've finally put my YouTube account to use.

I was going to bring a box with me but then managed to forget that :D

I was really just trying to hit the bloody thing rather than go for any power. It's also bloody cold now so didn't want to strain myself this early in the competition :D

Good stuff kto.
I have hit pig melons before there also much tougher than they look.
Good start to the challenge.
Distance ??

I was about 10m roughly. I paced out 15m, looked back and thought "I am never going to hit it" so moved in a bit. Was still a challenge :D

First blood!!!
Awesome! I’ve been practicing shooting at my cup on a brush pile and keep barely missing it or hitting the branch it’s on. I think I could hit a pumpkin but I’m gonna practice another week or two before I get my pumpkin

The 4th hit which I didn't get on film (my girlfriend got cold and I felt guilty enough making her stand around watching me mess around in a field so she went home while I stayed on) but it was basically a direct hit. Not the best photos but you can see it mashed it up.

Man, if you can hit that small a pumpkin you’re doing real well! I bet you would have really done some damage to a larger more hollow one

I purchased my pumpkin today.
A jarrahdale grey pumpkin.
About 5 inch tall by 9 inch diameter.
Weighs just under 4 kilograms.
Cost $3.50 Australian.

Wish me luck

This thing is a lot harder than I imagined I'm gonna need to hit it hard.

for about £1.50 you can get medium sized orange pumpkins here.

We get weird looking tiny ones, but all the big ones are the traditional orange jobs :-)

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Mersa on Oct 11th, 2018 at 4:51am
Ok so I had my first day free to try sling my pumpkin.
I'll be honest, it was a bad day. I started with some hard hitting ammo . Lead filled clay glandes, lead sinkers, river stones and plum bobs . Let's just say I lost them pretty quick , then I moved on to bad inconsistent limestone rocks. My grouping wasn't all that bad 90% of the shots would have been within a meter radius , 50% in a 50cm radius , but to hit that pumpkin was not coming fast . I had one glance at throw 55 then when I got to shot 120 I had to stop my phone went dead. I returned later and got one glance and one hit in the next 30 shots. Then I had to move spots because I wanted better rocks. The limestone broke on impact. I went to a new spot and only had 8 or so shots before the land owner came to the drive. That was the end of the attempt for today , now lightings bad and I have to try another day .

I'll post a few pics of the pumpkin and try put up a few vids .
Will depend on sizes but I'll try.

1 glance
2 glance
3 hit

Good hit! It's a lot harder than it seems isn't it :D Certainly makes for a good challenge. I'm thinking of going out a bit later today and having another go. Might not have my camerwoman this time but I do have a (small) tripod so I'll see what I can do.

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Mersa on Oct 11th, 2018 at 5:23am
Well honestly I have had harder accuracy challenges that I hit faster but I think the fact my iPhone was clearly in dangers way and I was trying to smash the pumpkin not just hit it made my nerves get the better of me .
Gonna probally try one more day if I can then I want to shoot it with my slingbow and recurve bow for a comparison on damage.
This pumpkins tough!

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by kicktheotter on Oct 11th, 2018 at 7:04am
Went out quickly a little while ago and had another go. I wasn't much better accuracy-wise, LOTS of misses, but I did get one absolutely head on shot then followed that with a close miss and a hit to the cardboard box I was using as a stand. Due to no camera person, I had to just have the camera on a small tripod on the ground meaning I could either film myself or the pumpkin and I felt there was already far too much footage of me so focussed on the pumpkin. Cracked it pretty good :D

Good videos guys! Is there anyway we could get the stats of your equipment? Sling length and ammo weight would be very interesting to know.

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by kicktheotter on Oct 11th, 2018 at 7:27am
Well there were a lot of misses surrounding those hits and close calls. Also my aim is really terrible with Balearic. I think now I'm overthinking each throw so they keep going very far right. I might go back to practicing with tennis balls for a bit as I was worrying a bit about putting too much power in and it going too wild and into someone's garden. The bright side is that my fig 8 is actually getting pretty darn good.

I used the same sling both times, my very first sling (paracord and slingshot pouch), which is bout 147cm from retention loop to release knot. On the first attempt I used two different stones one being 191g the other being a monster 339g. This second attempt this morning I used one stone at 138g.

I want to as well. Just have to figure out how to get 8 days from a 7 day week.

Really good videos so far guys. Pumpkins seem to be far tougher opponents than I had previous anticipated. I know Mersa has a plumb bob of destruction. And KTO don't you have some kind of massive steel ball bearing of doom laying around? This may call for heavier firepower........    :) ;D

The sun was shining and I had a little time before the sun went down and the average walkers started coming out. Found a empty spot and had a sling at the pumpkin of doom. Better rocks hardness wise , maybe a little heavier/denser. Picked up 30 odd stones roughly the same size , set the pumpkin and camera and got straight into it.
Shot 16 was a direct hit , I had 2 more hits that glanced of the side of the pumpkin at shot 27 and 30.

A much more successful day. No warm up and a new spot. The stone that hit direct was pretty blunt. If it was sharper I think it would have imbedded. But then again this pumpkin a beast.

I'll post the videos if I can . But here's some pics

I left my pumpkin far too long. Went very fuzzy and squishy. I might get a second one if they drop the price at the end of the month. I got some fairly ok hits so I'm pretty happy. I would still want to try out a steel ball on one...

I'm in the same boat . My pumpkin maybe has one more session left it it but it has definitely started to go hairy .
I want to try steel or lead , but I'd say im done with the odd stones

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest!
Post by Mersa on Oct 21st, 2018 at 4:14am
My pumpkin is officially dead I had my last attempt from 10m but was stuck with the same odd stones. I had one glancing hitbut not sure how many throws , maybe 40.
Then I moved the camera close and threw from approx 5-6 m
Bigger stones and trying to hit the old wounds. They were mouldy soft and on both oppisite sides. Had 2 major hits on the soft stuff.
Note to anyone who's doing this , get heavy dense sharp ammo if you want to destroy a fresh pumpkin. If the challenge of smashing a "Fresh" pumpkin isn't do important as just hitting the pumpkin and you want some theatrics they remove parts and let it go rotten. Rocks work great then!!

If you can have a second camera behind the pumpkin - that would work in your favour :-)

Jaegoor is not eligible for the prize. I mean, come on he's just too good at this kind of thing ;-)

Hope the offer of a prize still stands?

Not trying to sneak the victory from Mersa but I didn't want him to go uncontested either! And it gave me a good excuse to get back into slinging. Enjoy!

Had about a 20% hit rate, one shot with the "perfect rock" went the whole way through. Good to get back into it.

Wish I had a pumpkin like that , that was what I was expecting would happen with that type , my pumpkin was basically a little log.

Nothing like a pumpkin snuff video to get you ready for the holiday season. Well done Dan. I love it.

I love Dan's video too but I think Mersa is a deserving winner also. How about we call it a tie and give them both a gold medal? ;)

I really like them both as well. It's hard to choose. Maybe one person gets the top of the mould and the other the bottom.  ;D.

Seriously though really good videos from both guys. Well done!

Good slinging all round. Next year I'll be more prepared and hopefully will have more time.
