Title: Skullcracker
Post by slingbadger on May 15th, 2018 at 7:44pm
Picked this up the other day. 23 inches long and just shy of 2 lbs. Have no idea what the wood is. It looks like walnut but has a sweetish smell. I'll have to try to find something to try it on.

Hmmm... It doesn't look knobby enough to be blackthorn, but I'm no shillelagh expert.  I know a lot of them were also made of oak traditionally.

Now that really does look like a Skullcracker. Ouch.

pretty lumpy, not walnut or oak - blackthorn is more likely.
Some sort of smaller tree/hedge anyway.
I've turned a couple like that in the past.

Sweetish smell? Interesting. Too bad it's stained, makes it pretty difficult to guess what species. Nice skullcracker though. Around here that would probably end up being my catfish whacker.

It's not stained. That's the natural color of the wood

It sounds somewhat like Jamwood, which is endemic to Western Australia.

Jamwood has the dark colouration and the sweet smell you are describing, which can smell like raspberry jam.

It could very-well be made from a similar wood to Jamwood.

Jam wood is a Brilliant wood , very dense , should basically sink in water if it's jam wood , take a photo of the end grain. That will help figure it out.

I have quite a bit of experience with cudgels and shillelaghs.I don't think this is blackthorn. It could be Ash,which was darkened with fire/varnish.Anyways,looks cool.

I'll guess persimmon.

It's in the ebony family and the heart wood of some of the older trees can get pretty dark.  No clue about the sweet smell, I have persimmons on my place but I'm not going to run out and cut one down to see what it smells like.   ;D

I don't have a clue as to what kind of wood it is but I shrunk your picture. Nice weapon.
