Title: My New Kukri
Post by kicktheotter on Apr 25th, 2018 at 12:38pm
I've always loved the look of forward facing knives and swords The sica, falx, falcata, kopis, "talon" knives etc. and, of course, the kukri (khukuri). Now I finally have my own! This one to be precise:

It's really beautiful and the craftsmanship is flawless. I just had to show it off here :D

Not seen one of those before.

It's called a chakmak and isn't actually sharp but meant for honing the edge of the blade. The small knife is called the karda.

Nice knife.  I like it.

If you like forward curved knives and swords, check out some of the Central African swords like the membala or membala or the shotel.

Oh yeah those are another type I really like. A lot of African weapons are really interesting.

I'm not sure why but inward curving weapons just really appeal to me. There's this book series which is REALLY good called The Edge Chronicles and in the second book, Stormchaser, there's a flathead goblin who uses a sickle as a weapon and it might well be that that first influenced me :D

That should be "membele or mambala".  Both the same weapon, just different ways to pronounce it.

I think I will try to make one this weekend.  I have some commercial lawn mower blades, I will split one lengthwise with an angle grinder with a cutting blade, fire up the grill and go to beating.

I think I will try a shotel first.  It's a double edged, slim bladed, slashing short sword without a guard.  It was made to be able to stab or slash around  a shield, thus the point and in curved blade.  It was used with a small round shield.

I know that. But usually the sharpening one still looks like a mini knife. First time I've seen one that's a flat cutout of a different material. Thought maybe it was the magnesium stuff for fire lighting :-)

Oh right yeah sometimes they are made more as a "set" and sometimes it's just a piece of steel like this one.
