Title: Grommets: good or bad?
Post by Drakolith on Dec 29th, 2016 at 5:52pm
I was told by CA that grommets on slings are counter productive (I don't quite understand how) and just wanted to see what other people thought about using grommets for slings, do they benefit or hurt a sling?

I think it would have to be a very big grommet/eyelet to make a difference.
I have used them as.well as.rivets and found them to work out quite well

So would 1/2 inch be a good size?

I used boot grommets on my first sling.  I agree with CA.  They seem to cause the pouch to have unusual and unpredictable warpage when under the strain of a throw.   There are plenty of ways to attach a cord so the forces are transferred evenly into the pouch material and tear-out isn't an issue.

I might consider grommets on a captive release pouch, but that's about it.

I would never use them because they would show up on a metal detector.

I wouldn't use more than 1/4" grommets.
I used them in the middle of the pouch to create cupping more than to attach the cords. I like to sew my cords onand whip over top of the stiches

Whenever possible, I use grommets.
But I will do everything in my own way. :)

bear in mind that timpa sharpens his grommets into mini shuriken and fires them at clowns from his grommet gun

Cord grips leather and the leather deforms to make a great grip. Metal grommets are not only unnecessary, they just stop the leather from shaping properly, the pouch swings unevenly from them and they encourage single cord attachment rather than a loop. All of which are bad.

Like I said, I did make one, it wasn't good :-)

I dusted off sling #1 that I saved after all these years, it is grommeted,  and it drops more stones than it casts.  It's a miracle that I persevered through its design flaws rather than giving up on slinging in frustration and/or disgust. The pouch, even though it is crafted from a thin and supple leather (kid, or doe perhaps) simply does not cup, but behaves like a thick rubber playground swing seat.  The cordage was lacing from a work boot, attached through the grommets with bowline knots.  If a projectile doesn't fall out from the lack of cupping, it certainly is falling out as a result of the cord pouch joint being looser than a greased swivel.

I had a very similar sling to the one you describe Arcane. It was a danger to man and beast alike. But mostly to the user. I think a little bit of cupping is good. Apache slings, like other well made slings, apply the tension force in such a way that the leather naturally cups a little during use, yet release very cleanly provided you use good ammo.

Actually, I am just trying out a sling to throw a mini Chakrams. :)

I haven't tried making/using a leather pouch yet. Worthwhile?

If I was trying to sling mini chakrams, I'd just use a pouchless sling. Cordage with a finger loop on one end and a knot on the other. Upon release, the cord should slip out of the loop of the chakram.

This is exactly what I have done. But the nodes may not be the string end.
(Video will come later.)
