Title: A medieval kite shield.
Post by Mauro Fiorentini on Dec 26th, 2016 at 7:19am
Here it is! It's 1,50 meters long and 60 centimeters width at its maximum!
It's made of 3 layers of chestnut wood, each one applied perpendicular to the other, covered with 5 layers of linen and chalk.
It's 1,5 centimeters thick, which makes it 1/3 thick than an original 13th century one which is currently stored at the National Switzerland Museum - this one is almost 5 centimeters thick  :o

He who'll recognize the heraldry and the quote behind the sentence will get a bravo  ;D

Is this using the traditional materials they would have used? Nice looking shield by the way.

It's not heavy at all, around 2 kilos.... Morpy, I did use traditional materials (chestnut wood, linen and chalk) and traditional technics (applying each layer of wood perpendicular to the other) but I also used modern tools and glues.
All this just because I wanted a shield that was funny (I'll tell you about the heraldry and the motto if nobody guess it) but still looking historically correct.
That's why I translated the motto from English to Italian and then to Latin, and why I drew it on the shield using a typical Medieval font  :D

It could have been used as a knight's shield, but they soon changed it with a smaller, triangular one.
This has been the classic footman's shield from the 11th Century to the whole 13th at last, and it was spread throughout whole Europe.
The Swiss one dates from 1200 to 1275.
