Title: New bronze weapons, freshly cast. Post by jlasud on Nov 18th, 2013 at 6:41am
So,here are the fruits of my second casting session :
The axe, is a Scythian style "Fokos". Similar to the tomahawk, widely used by Scythians,Alans, Sarmatians,Huns,Avars etc. |

What are you alloying? Can you show your foundry setup? Nice work btw! I am always interested in foundrywork and patternmaking. I can't wait to get back into it myself, but that's just not possible right now.

I'm curious about the blade at the bottom. Judging from it's shape, I would guess it's used for stabbing rather than hack slash?

The axe head looks wicked!

I like!
It looks like you have already hammered an edge on the ax, have you cut anything with it yet? How does the knife hold an edge? |

WOW!
Impressed as always. |

The bronze was from a rock drilling machines big cogwheel or what. Very though bronze alloy. Plus i mixed in a few small pieces of plumbing bronze pieces.
The dagger,is probably suitable for stabbing :P But it will cut also, i just have to sharpen it, and make a grip for it.(wrapped, glued leather) Test, later on. Maybe the week to come, i can take a photo of my foundry setup. The axe is not hammered,it used to have those marks from a bit of angle grinding. Now it's sharpened, razor sharp, and they're not visible anymore. Thanks guys! Tomorrow,i'll post a pic with the Fokos axe sharpened and with a handle. |

The downward angle is good for slashing action. Sort of like how sabers draw themselves in the cut.

Title: Re: New bronze weapons, freshly cast. Post by David Morningstar on Nov 25th, 2013 at 7:16am I like the axe. Were they thrown, originally? |

Are those rammed up sand molds with a core for the handles? Or are you doing some sort of investment casting?

Clay-sand molds with cores where it's needed.
DM: Considering how valuable they were, i don't think they threw it around much. Maybe as a last ditch effort. Are you thinking about the shapes similarity with the franciska? |
Title: Re: New bronze weapons, freshly cast. Post by David Morningstar on Dec 3rd, 2013 at 3:14pm Yes, it does look rather similar and would stick very well. |
