Title: Sling Competition: Scores! Let's do this!
Post by Dan on Aug 6th, 2013 at 3:46pm
Allright, I've out of patience and I'm tired of all this government-ish decision making.

Lets just have the competition. Here are the rules:

Any sling, Any Style, Any solid ammo (no shot gunning or chain slinging ;) ).

Distances at 10, 15, and 20 meters (or 11, 16, and 21 yards for Americans :) ). These closer distances are ideal for those with less room or new slingers.

Standard Balearic target, 1.2 meter (4 feet) target with a .5 meter (foot and half) bulls-eye. http://slinging.org/index.php?page=balearic-sling-competitions---vicente

2 points for hit on black, one point for white.

Targets can be painted on a wall, made from carpet, cardboard, netting, whatever you can get your hands on.

5 shots at each distance. (for those with short memories, that's 10, 15, and 20m. 15 shots total)

30 points is a perfect score. No rewards for now besides self satisfaction and being able to see your improvement recorded online.

This will run primarily on the honor system (not everyone has time or access to a video camera). Please have honor and be honest.

You can enter your scores as many times as you'd like but you have to take each session (15 shots, 3 distances) together (as opposed to the best of three sessions).

OR...

Same general rules, any sling, any solid ammo, any style, Balearic target, same scoring.

However, the distance and shot count would be 10 shots at 10 meters and 10 shots at 15 meters.

Perfect score of 40.

It doesn't matter what order you sling at distance wise, but traditionally, you start close and move back.

Who's with me?  8-)

First time target slinging in a couple months and I scored a 12 on the first system and a 21 on the second. Personally I thought the second number as a little more self esteem building and we can start with that and work towards the first system once we're all a little better. :)

Try each and let me know what you think!

Outstanding idea, count me in, also.  Spray paint on the side of the barn, my neighbors already think I'm nuts, anyways.

Its been raining for the past couple days but its supposed to clear up on sunday and I'll see if I can get my first entry then.  :)

count me in! i only have 24 hours to myself a week right now, but i'll start keeping score ASAP. i'm asking a local martial arts school about throwing together a bit of a "learn to sling day/ slinging competition" as well, because it would be very similar to some of the weapons clinics they already do  :)

soon as I get round to making  a portable balearic target I'll give it a go.

See how much time I get next week (ie: how much work I get in)

This sounds awesome! Did I miss the part about where the scores shall be posted? I'm in no way capable of competing with anyone but I would REALLY be interested in watching some videos of those that can do this while filming ;0) hopefully some of you brave souls will take this challenge and run with it!

Just to point out that the board should be nearer to 4 feet than 5 (it's 1.20m instead of 1.5 :) )

i thought 5 ft sounded wayy to big....

Right! I forgot that in Spanish the comma is the equivalent of the decimal point so somehow I read it as 1 and a half. IDK. Anyway, I'll edit it in the main post but it should be about 4ft.
Thanks.

1.2 meters=3.93701 feet
.5 meter=1.64042 feet.

"1.2 meters=3.93701 feet

Yep, I have access to search engine converters too.  ::) But for people who don't want to measure down to the 100,000 place, 4 feet base and foot and half bulls eye will do.  ;)

yep...
same.
Except I use this great thing called a tape measure with foot and centimeters on it so I don't have to do conversions ;)

Maybe y'all get converted to the metric system. FINALLY! :D

Allright, its been about two months since I've really slung at a target slung so it was a little rough. I'm a slightly above average slinger and I scored a 12 on the original system.

Since I want this to be for everyone and I don't want to quickly diminish my rock cache, I'm going to introduce another system (See original post) as well and you guys can try each and let me know what you think!

i like the first system best. putting the 20m in there forces you to put some power behind it. i used it today but the best i got was a 10 XD gives me something to work towards though. next goal: get 13 so i'll know i've beaten someone lol.

Title: Re: Sling Competition: Let's do this!

You're on. I'm going for 15 now!  ;)

I'll try again tomorrow and see what happens. This is definitely the benefit of competition is that it encourages excellence!  :)

The more people we get in this the better but even if we only have a few people , as long as you show some improvement, at least you've beaten yourself.  8-)

Title: Re: Sling Competition: Scores! Let's do this!
Post by Dan on Aug 14th, 2013 at 12:10pm
Tried again today. Much better. I switched from a 28" sling to a 24" sling and got some more consistent rocks.

I also re-measured my target (which I thought was a little big so I was going to trim it down some), turns out it was 42" wide and 40" deep as opposed to 48" and my bulls-eye was 4" short in diameter.  :D So I expanded my Diana and counted the hits just barely outside the target.

Using system one, I got a 17!  :)

Its good to see personal improvement. I'd highly encourage you guys to try it out! There's really no way for us to all meet up so this is a good way to compete.

yep, it is :)
I tried... and got a 12 :( EDIT- on the first scale, forgot to specify.
but I also have to retire 3 slings now- a rockman I have been using for only about 8 months, my Apache I got from donnershalg, and my good ole aussie...

but I have a totally new sling design I shall share later.

squirrel, 12 is pretty good (better than me anyway). i'm getting the feeling we should make a sticky topic for posting scores. this should be a big thing!

Title: Re: Sling Competition: Scores! Let's do this!
Post by squirrelslinger on Aug 14th, 2013 at 5:27pm
given that I have been working on my accuracy for the past 3 months(the entire summer)... that doesn't seem good.
I used a 25" apache, and lead ammunition. I re-used ammo- only used 10 rounds total(aka I lost 10 rounds... misses and such. i could re-use most of my hits)...

SS,what you have as a backstop?

Title: Re: Sling Competition: Scores! Let's do this!
Post by Dan on Aug 15th, 2013 at 8:59am
SS, that's no score to be ashamed of. That was my first score and I've been slinging pretty actively for four years.

It think I'll just do away with system two, system one is good enough.

some of what used to be chipboard... but i shot it with arrows so many times i can easily stab through it... also some cardboard held up with duct tape and stuff. And a rotten hay bale- but i never found the 2 shots that went into that(although i destructed the rotten remains of the haybale)  my "glandes" are 4 oz fishing weights(got about 20 from the scrapyard) painted a neon orange... I didn't sling super de duper hard...  Anyway... the target is cardboard on a stick frame...

i got 5 (1x2, 3x1)

made a near perfect sling and changed my ammo from 40-50 gram concrete ammo to 70-75 gram Rusty Balls today and finally scored 13! it's just an improvement of 3 points.. but it happened in under an hour, so i'm happy with myself. my goal is to hit 20 before it starts snowing.

EDIT: i went from around 60g to 130g. apparently the scale i was supplied by my parents was WAY off. so i recently got a new one.

Awesome!
if only... i will try agian tommorow for real(for real- i use lead or smooth stone).
I made a new sling and am getting insane velocities...

I took series of 10 shots at 20m. And  biggest score was 10. A lot of 1-3 points  :P

Wow...
You ought to try it in Lorica segmenta :)

Not sure when i get the chance...but it didn't seem to affect my accuracy much. Although a little gettin-used-to-it slinging would help.

Great job guys!

This is a tough system, but don't be discouraged if your scores aren't quite where you want. Instead be motivated to work on accuracy, experiment with different styles, different length slings, and different ammo.

Thanks for participating and keep on slinging!

With five shots each on 10, 15 and 20 meters I scored a maximum of 18. The average series score is around 12 to 15.
I used water filled tennisballs (around 150 g) and a 60 cm long sling.

The most problems I had with the 10 meter distance. The consistency of my shots fell quite a bit, when moving from 15 to 10 m. This may be also due to the fact, that I usually train on 20m and more and so it was a bit unfamiliar to shoot at short distances.

nice!!!
hm... i have found that the arc/length of the sling messes with my angles(with figure 8 the projectile is released almost 8 feet off the ground

I'll have to make some more concrete ammo and see what i can do. Sounds like fun.

Title: Re: Sling Competition: Scores! Let's do this!
Post by jlasud on Oct 5th, 2013 at 9:22am
Morphy: You might want to try my new method for making uniform weight ammo with quite precise weighting, quite quick: I use a 100ml syringe, cut off nozzle end,in a way that just barely stops the piston from getting pushed out easily. Then i push the syringe (with piston pushed in) into clay, until i get the desired volume ex.70ml,then i just push out the clay rod, roll, repeat. Should work with concrete too. Even better. It's a bit hard to push it in clay, especially with volumes closer to max capacity.

That is ingenious jlasud.  I will give that a shot as soon as I can get a hold of a syringe. Thanks.  :)

Hope, you'll find it useful,i'm glad if it helped. Looking forward to your exp. with concrete.  ;)

Sorry for being slightly off topic. (although uniform ammo is part of accuracy during comp. )
