Title: Single strand Paracord split pouch sling tutorial
Post by CodeMaker on May 9th, 2013 at 8:26pm
I got some extra time today, and decided to go ahead and make this tutorial. This tutorial is about how to make a split pouch sling out of one continuous piece of cord. You'll need about 20 feet of Paracord.

Make a release knot. I like to use a Celtic Heart Knot (there are tutorials on Youtube if you'd like to learn this knot).

About 31 inches from the release knot (the distance from my fingertips to my chest), make the shape of a stretched out "S" with the Paracord. it should be about 5 and 1/2 inches long, as shown bellow.

tie an overhand knot with the release cord around the top curve of the "S."

place the top of the "S" under/between the bottom part, as shown bellow.

begin weaving. keep the bottom two strands clumped together, and weave tightly between them and the top one.

once you've finished the weaving as tightly as possible, use a pencil to make a hole at the bottom.

Now thread the Paracord through the hole. note that because i finished weaving while going UNDER a strand, i am going DOWN the hole.

make a hole on the other end and go down this whole as well, ending where you finished weaving.

you should be able to make it look somewhat like this.

begin weaving. make an effort to have this side of the pouch partly under the first one you made, as shown.

tie it off at the end. note that the side of the pouch previously on top is now on bottom.

Now just tie a finger loop, cut off the extra string (don't forget to burn the end to prevent fraying), and go show off your new sling!

If you like the design but don't have time to make your own, I'm selling these for $25 with free shipping within the continental U.S. Feel free to Email me at mechengineer1000@gmail.com if you are interested. Recognize that this is a private sale and Slinging.org can not be held accountable.

Okay, now that I know how it's made I think it's even more ingenious.

It's certainly not how I thought it would be done. I thought it would have been done by forming the bends for both halves of the pouch at your preffered distance down one cord, and then weaving back up one, and then down the other to be back at your start point. Then tying through with that cord before bring it to it's terminus as well.

How wrong I was! As usual!  :D

I thought about doing something like that, but I found it was more difficult to make consistent and was harder to make the two halves overlap at the ends. that's my experience, anyway.

Thanks for the advice.

I had made a singe strand paracord sling for my first sling I ever made, but it didn't come out quite this nice, and has a weird, not overlapping, area for the pouch, but it is a partial split pouch with a strand down the middle... its hard to explain without a picture... however, I will upload one soon.  All told, its just not nearly as elegant or simple and effective as this design.  Bravo!  I will be making this very soon.

Here it is... low quality ipod pictures, but you get the Idea.  It was made with a single strand of paracord, probably about 25-30 feet.  The pouch is 6 inches long, with an overall length of 27 inches to the center of the pouch from the grips.

I understand the want to have it remain a single strand for utility's sake.  I am a "survivalist" and am always trying to find ways to maximize efficiency or redesign things for more usage.  I very much like your design though.

Nice design; and classy choice for the release knot!  ;)
(I use an Ashley's Stopper Knot, myself.)

I made it, finally! But for some reason, I had 11 extra feet of paracord???

11 extra feet??? wow, that is really weird. I've never had more than 5 extra feet in extreme cases. i wonder what you did differently.

Great tutorial!
For some reason I thought it'd be a good idea to have 20ft of paracord in the same room as 4 cats  ;D ::)

Attempted with 20'  ... not enough 30-35' for my line will be needed... what size line do you use to get this done with 20'

After about two hours in total of weaving I finished it  ;D
It was made quite difficult by my cats, had to shut them out of the room   :P

Steven,

The cord I use is just standard type III paracord.

Panda,

That is one beautiful sling! I've got a few cats of my own, so I can understand the difficulty.

Thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial, CodeMaker.  Having made a few myself I know how much work is involved.  We're grateful for your contribution.

This seems to be an easier buid than the original build in the guides and article page. the other incorporated multiple cords and had a tendency for the pouch to slide around a bit. Great design.

Thanks for this post! I've recently gotten into slinging and have been focusing on slings making slings from paracord. Tested this one out and is my favorite so far. The sling turned out nice as well.
