Title: Balearic Slings from Mallorcashop.net
Post by Okieslinger on Feb 15th, 2013 at 5:08pm
My apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post this (it appeared to me to violate the rules for Marketplace and Trading Post).  I emailed several online retailers in the Balearic Islands some time ago to purchase an authentic Balearic sling.  One company emailed me today to say they now carry slings made by a local artist.  The prices seem crazy high, but I wanted to make this info available for anyone interested. They carry five different sling types.

anyone know what these materials that they are made of actually are?  What is esparto, etc?  I can tell that vegetable fiber means a natural fiber, but what about the rest?

Ok. I cannot do esparto. but i can and will happily do Jute( I can dye it to make it look like that) for like $5 or so). here is the catch- i have not had any time to mail stuff lately, nor the cash.

Diego Camunas sells them for 20 Euros face-to-face.

I think especially in braided slings there is a huge range in quality and therefore working time. A very fine and intrinsicate braided sling made out of loose fibers can easily take more than 5 hours to make. And when I see that simple 30 minutes slings are sold for 10 $ I consider a high quality braided sling definitely worth 40 Euro. Now you only have to judge by the pictures how good the quality is ;).

Sisal, pita, and esparto are varieties of agave.

Esparto not is agave, esparto is (Stipa tenacissima) or (Lygeum spartum).

A few years ago, Luis Pons Livermore sold some beautifully made Balearic slings to some members for 40 Euros, so the price is actually fair for those balearic slings (It takes hours to make one, thatīs a lot of work to be sold cheap.)

Yeah, to your friends, and you don't have to make a living out of it nor are you a professionnal (at least, not yet).

That's not the same scale.

This being said, I won't buy it over the Internet ^^

Thanks for the info.  I may be willing to pay that when I have some spare cash.  I really like the italian style one.

I decided not to get it. If you click any other of his models the price goes way up, and on some the picture is the same so how are we supposed to know what we are paying a ridiculous amount for? Which I was willing to do until I realized I didn't really know what kind of sling I would be buying..

I've always wondered how something as time consuming to make as a sling can be sold so cheaply! If I was to charge by the hour the things would be pretty expensive for me to feel good about handing it over.
